Underground
The silent threshold where surface soil yields to stone and ancient traps
The Underground is the first layer below the surface . It fills the area between the Surface and Cavern layers, beginning at a depth of 0ft and extending downward. Its distinctive background can recognize the Underground, which no longer contains naturally-placed Dirt Walls like surface terrain, but instead displays a unique, often brown, backdrop with no naturally-placed walls . Players cannot remove this backdrop using a Hammer , nor can they place blocks in midair, as no wall generally exists here (though players can place their walls, just as they can above surface terrain). Natural Underground blocks are generally similar to those in the surface, with Dirt and Stone making up the majority of the biome. Clay , Silt , and lower-tier gems and ores can also be found in small pockets here. Some miscellaneous treasures can be found here, including Gem Trees (which drop Gemcorns , Stone , and occasionally their respective gems when chopped down); dye plants including Green Mushrooms , Orange Bloodroot , and Teal Mushrooms ; and the Blinkroot herb . The Underground is home to more aggressive enemies than the surface. More powerful Red and Yellow Slimes will spawn down here (alongside the rare Pinky ), while Blue Jellyfish spawn in the water and Giant Worms are found burrowing through the ground. In Hardmode, more powerful counterparts of these enemies will spawn, with the Digger , Green Jellyfish , and Toxic Sludge mostly replacing Giant Worms, Blue Jellyfish, and regular Slimes respectively. Traps will also begin appearing in this layer. Underground Cabins, though not as common as in the Caverns, will frequently appear with handy loot such as the Cloud in a Bottle , Hermes Boots , and Magic Mirror . In general, not much time is spent here, but instead in the Cavern layer,
Lore & Background
Beneath the sun-warmed skin of the world lies the Underground, a transitional realm where the familiar dirt gives way to the first whispers of deep earth. Here, the sky is no longer visible, replaced by a unique brown backdrop that stretches endlessly downward from the zero-foot mark. This layer acts as a buffer between the open expanse above and the crushing darkness of the Caverns below. Unlike the surface, nature has not placed walls here; the air feels hollow, yet it holds secrets in pockets of clay, silt, and lower-tier ores waiting to be unearthed.
Life in this dim corridor is more aggressive than what dwells above. Red and Yellow Slimes patrol the tunnels with increased ferocity, while Giant Worms tear through the soil like living drills. In the shallow pools, Blue Jellyfish drift with bioluminescent grace, hiding deadly stings within their translucent forms. Yet, amidst this danger, humanity has left its mark in the form of scattered Underground Cabins, relics of forgotten travelers that hide treasures like the Cloud in a Bottle and the Magic Mirror. It is a place of fleeting passage for most, a necessary descent before plunging into the true deep, where the world's oldest guardians sleep.
In Their Own Story
You step down from the grassy ledge, the air growing cooler as you cross the invisible line at zero feet. The familiar blue sky vanishes, replaced by a dull, brownish haze that seems to swallow sound. Your torchlight flickers against walls of raw dirt and stone, revealing no natural barriers to lean upon. Suddenly, a low rumble vibrates through your boots. From the earth ahead, a Giant Worm erupts, its segmented body thrashing as it burrows toward you with hungry intent.
You dodge the crushing maw, rolling behind a cluster of Clay blocks. Nearby, a Red Slime bounces heavily, its form pulsing with aggression. You glance downward and spot a patch of Blinkroot glowing faintly in the gloom, a rare herb waiting to be harvested. Further ahead, half-buried in the dirt, stands an abandoned Underground Cabin. Its door creaks open as you approach, revealing a chest that gleams with the promise of Hermes Boots. For a moment, the danger fades, replaced by the thrill of discovery. You are no longer on the surface; you are in the threshold, where the world begins to turn inward.
Reader's Guide
To reach the Underground, simply descend from the Surface until your depth meter reads 0ft. The transition is marked by a change in background to a unique brown pattern with no naturally placed walls. While Dirt and Stone dominate the terrain, look for small pockets of Clay, Silt, and lower-tier ores like Copper or Iron.
Combat here requires caution. Expect aggressive Red and Yellow Slimes alongside Giant Worms that can burrow through blocks. In water-filled areas, Blue Jellyfish will attack. If you have entered Hardmode, prepare for Diggers, Toxic Sludges, and Green Jellyfish which replace their pre-Hardmode counterparts.
Scavenge diligently for resources. Chop Gem Trees to collect Gemcorns and occasional gems. Harvest herbs like Blinkroot, Green Mushrooms, and Teal Mushrooms. Explore the frequent Underground Cabins for high-value loot including the Cloud in a Bottle, Hermes Boots, Magic Mirror, and the rare Enchanted Sword or Terragrim. Use this layer as a staging ground; while some time is spent here, most players quickly descend to the Caverns for greater rewards.
For fishing enthusiasts, ensure you are in a pure Underground biome to catch exclusive species like Gold Carp or Bonefish, avoiding contamination from other biomes.
