The Corruption

A purple wasteland where decay reigns and chasms lead to shadowed depths

The Corruption is an evil biome with a dark purple wasteland, death, and decay theme, with an evil forest design to it, in contrast to the red gore theme of its counterpart, The Crimson . Every world will contain one of the two, generated randomly (each with a 50% chance of occurring) or chosen by the player upon world creation. Both contain similar hazards and feature their own unique enemies , items , and blocks . The tools , weapons , and armor obtained via Corruption materials are generally faster, but slightly less powerful than those obtained via Crimson materials. Corruption enemies tend to have slightly lower stats, such as health, defense, and damage. The Corruption surface contains purple Corrupt grass , Corrupt Trees , and Vile Mushrooms . Purple thorny bushes grow on the grass and will damage the player when touched. Water in the Corruption is also purple. The Corruption also contains multiple chasms , underground extensions of the biome. Chasms lead downwards in a straight line, some crossing a horizontal connector, ending with a Shadow Orb . Demon Altars generally line the chasm's passages, appearing inside and around it. Chasms consist of Ebonstone , which can be blown up by explosives , mined with a Nightmare / Deathbringer Pickaxe or higher, or purified to Stone by using Purification Powder , the Clentaminator , and the Terraformer . The Corruption spreads, meaning it slowly converts adjacent tiles to their Corruption variants. See below for details. Chasms, Demon Altars, and Shadow Orbs will only appear upon world generation, and will not spawn in a Corruption area that has formed through spreading. For an area to be considered a Corruption biome, at least 300 tiles of Corrupt grass or Corruption blocks must be present. - 1 Contents - 2 Spread - 3 Corr

Lore & Background

In the heart of a world born under a cursed star, The Corruption spreads like a living wound upon the land. It is not merely a place, but an ancient, sentient rot that twists the earth into jagged chasms lined with Demon Altars and guarded by Shadow Orbs. Where once forests stood tall, now only gnarled Corrupt Trees and thorny purple bushes claw at the sky, their roots drinking deep from tainted waters that shimmer with a sickly violet hue. This biome is the antithesis of life, a realm where death and decay are not just consequences but the very fabric of existence.

The Corruption whispers to those who dare enter its domain, promising power through shadow scales and demonite ore, yet demanding a toll in sanity and flesh. It generates randomly alongside its red-gore counterpart, The Crimson, ensuring that every world bears the mark of one of these twin evils. Within its depths lie the bones of fallen titans, for it is here that the Eater of Worlds slumbers, waiting to be summoned by the breaking of its Shadow Orbs. To walk this path is to embrace a faster but slightly weaker strength, trading raw power for speed in the tools and armor forged from its twisted materials.

Though limited in its reach during the early ages of the world, The Corruption awakens fully once the Wall of Flesh falls, spreading with terrifying speed across deserts and snows alike. It transforms cacti into silent sentinels and ice into purple shards that crackle with unholy energy. Only the defeat of Plantera can slow its relentless advance, granting a brief respite from the encroaching darkness that seeks to consume all in its path.

In Their Own Story

You descend into the chasm, your boots crunching on Ebonstone that seems to pulse beneath your weight. The air grows thick with the scent of rotting earth and ozone as purple thorns brush against your armor, leaving stinging marks on exposed skin. Above, the sky is a bruised tapestry of dark clouds, filtering light into an eerie violet gloom that makes your eyes water. Suddenly, a low hum vibrates through the ground, and from the shadows emerges a Devourer, its segmented body writhing like a living chain of nightmares.

You draw your weapon, the metal humming in response to the Corruption's presence. The Eater of Souls circles overhead, casting long, distorted shadows that seem to reach for you even as they touch nothing. Your heart hammers against your ribs as you realize you are not alone; the chasm itself is alive, watching, waiting. You spot a Shadow Orb nestled in a alcove, its surface swirling with dark energy. To break it is to risk awakening something far worse than the worms that now surround you. With a breath held tight, you strike the orb, and the ground trembles as if the world itself gasps in pain.

Reader's Guide

Identify The Corruption by its signature purple grass, thorny bushes, and chasms lined with Ebonstone blocks. Look for Demon Altars and Shadow Orbs within these vertical shafts. The biome requires at least 300 tiles of corrupt material to activate fully, though enemies can spawn with just one tile.

Hazards include damaging thorns, purple water that slows movement, and aggressive enemies like the Eater of Souls, Devourer, and Corruptor. In Hardmode, watch for Toxikarp and Cursedfish in specific biomes like deserts and snows.

Harvest Ebonwood from trees for building, collect Vile Mushrooms and Deathweed for potions, and mine Demonite Ore and Shadow Scales to craft the Nightmare Pickaxe and Ancient Shadow armor. Defeat the Eater of Worlds by breaking three Shadow Orbs or using Worm Food. In Expert Mode, claim the Worm Scarf from its Treasure Bag.

Build your base near the edge but outside the 300-tile threshold to avoid constant enemy spawns, or construct an isolated arena for boss fights. Use Purification Powder to clear paths if needed, and remember that defeating Plantera slows the biome's spread significantly.
