Desert

Where heat shimmers hide ancient secrets beneath endless dunes

The Desert is a biome which consists predominantly of Sand Blocks and cacti . Every world contains a main Desert area (which houses the Underground Desert biome beneath it) and, possibly, additional small Desert patches called Dunes (which only contain layers of Sand Blocks on the surface and do not have underground parts). Pyramids and small pools of water can rarely appear in Dunes. Objects in the Desert appear slightly hazy due to heat distortion , and water has a unique turquoise color. A Desert can also be generated with an Oasis mini-biome, featuring Palm trees and a large pool of water in the center. An area is considered a Desert biome if there are at least 1500 Sand Blocks , Hardened Sand Blocks or Sandstone Blocks , causing the water and background to change. Cacti and Desert enemies can spawn on even a single block of sand, however. Deserts are overridden by most other biomes, including the Ocean . Rain will occur in Deserts just as in any other surface biome. A Sandstorm may occur when wind speed is over 30 mph, which causes special enemies to spawn and pushes the player in the direction of the wind. The Desert can be infected by the Corruption , the Crimson , or the Hallow . Corruption/Crimson Deserts may already spawn upon world creation. The enemies from the main biome (the evil biome or the Hallow) can spawn in an infected Desert alongside the normal Desert enemies (except for Mummies and Sand Sharks , which have special biome-specific variants), and the music from the main biome is played. The sand in an infected Desert is replaced by Ebonsand , Crimsand , or Pearlsand Blocks , respectively. Although their color will change, cacti still drop Cactus when cut, and Waterleaf are also able to grow in a Hallowed Desert. - Corrupted Desert - Crimson Desert -

Lore & Background

In the scorching expanse where the sun bleaches all color save for turquoise, the Desert stands as a testament to forgotten ages. Here, the air itself distorts the horizon, warping reality behind a veil of thermal haze. Beneath the shifting sands lie the whispers of an ancient saltwater river, now dried and buried, leaving only the skeletons of leviathans and the hollow echo of wind through cactus spines. The ground holds its breath, waiting for the rare storm that brings not rain, but the howling fury of a Sandstorm to scour the surface clean.

This realm is a place of duality, where life clings desperately to the arid soil in the form of hardy cacti and waterleaf, yet death lurks in every shadow. The sands themselves are mutable; corrupted by darkness or hallowed by light, they shift from gold to ebon, crimson, or pearlescent white, altering the very soul of the biome while the cacti remain stoic observers. Deep below, four distinct gates open into a subterranean labyrinth where mummies guard treasures and antlions tunnel through stone, connecting the surface heat to the cool, dark depths of the Underground Desert.

Pyramids rise like monolithic sentinels in some worlds, guarding the secrets of a civilization swallowed by time, while others remain featureless wastelands punctuated only by small oases. To walk here is to tread on unstable ground where the wind can push you backward and enemies spawn from a single grain of sand. It is a biome that demands respect, offering both the rarest keys to underground vaults and the most relentless trials for those foolish enough to seek its plunder.

In Their Own Story

You step onto the dunes, the heat radiating through your boots as the air shimmers with deceptive clarity. The world turns a hazy gold, and the water in the distance glows an unnatural turquoise, mocking your thirst. Suddenly, the wind picks up, not with a gentle breeze but with a roaring gale that threatens to shove you backward across the burning sand. A Sandstorm brews on the horizon, painting the sky in violent shades of ochre.

From the sand beneath your feet, a Vulture circles overhead, its shadow dancing erratically against the sun. You glance down and see the faint outline of an Antlion burrowing just below the surface, ready to erupt. To your left, a Mummy shuffles from behind a cluster of cacti, its tattered wrappings flapping in the gale. The heat distorts the shape of a distant pyramid, making it appear as if it is melting into the sky. You reach for your pickaxe, knowing that the sands hold more than just blocks; they guard a key, a rare artifact buried deep within this unforgiving wasteland. As the wind howls, you brace yourself, ready to dig or defend against the creatures born of this desolate heat.

Reader's Guide

To locate the Desert, scan your map for vast areas dominated by Sand Blocks, Hardened Sand, or Sandstone, requiring at least 1500 blocks to trigger the biome's distinct turquoise water and hazy background. Be aware that Oases with palm trees may appear, while Dunes are smaller patches lacking underground sections.

Hazards are immediate; enemies like Vultures, Antlions, Scorpions, and Mummies can spawn on even a single sand block. Prepare for Sandstorms when wind speeds exceed 30 mph, which push players and spawn unique foes. If the Corruption, Crimson, or Hallow infects the area, expect Ebonsand, Crimsand, or Pearlsand replacements alongside their respective enemy variants.

Harvest resources by cutting cacti for Cactus blocks and waterleaf during rain. Explore the surface entrances to the Underground Desert: Chambers, Pits, Anthills, or Larva holes, each leading to different subterranean layouts. In Celebration Mk 10 or Zenith worlds, a Pyramid replaces these entrances at the center.

Loot includes the rare Desert Key (1/2500 chance) and the Mummy set. Defeat enemies for Dark Shards, Light Shards, Antlion Mandibles, and accessories like the Fast Clock, Megaphone, Blindfold, or Trifold Map. Build a base here only if you are an NPC who tolerates it, as five NPCs dislike this harsh environment.
