Cavern

Where stone reigns supreme and ancient secrets sleep beneath the dirt

The Cavern layer is the largest layer of the world, beginning just below the Underground and extending down until the Underworld layer. Darker stone background tiles characterize it. Stone is the predominant block in this layer (as opposed to Dirt in the Underground), with frequent patches of Dirt, Silt , and Mud . Caverns contain occasional Underground Cabins where valuables can be found, as well as Glowing Mushroom biomes , mini-biomes like the Spider Nest , and occasional traps . In the lower areas of the Cavern layer, pools of lava can be found. Furthermore, the Cavern layer contains the underground versions of several surface biomes: the Ice biome , Underground Jungle , Underground Desert , and Underground Corruption / Crimson and Hallow . A large section of the Dungeon also extends through the Cavern layer. After defeating at least one Goblin Army , the Goblin Tinkerer NPC can be found in this layer. The Wizard NPC can also be found in this layer at any time during Hardmode . - 1 Contents - 2 NPC happiness - 3 Notes - 4 Gallery 4.1 Backgrounds 4.1.1 Pre-Underworld - 5 History

Lore & Background

This deep stratum acts as a mirror to the world above, hosting twisted versions of surface biomes like the frozen tundra or the verdant jungle, all buried under tons of rock. It is a sanctuary for lost souls, where the Bound Goblin Tinkerer awaits liberation after a goblin defeat, and the enigmatic Wizard wanders in solitude during Hardmode. From the rare Nymph to the spectral Ghosts that haunt the air, life here has adapted to the crushing darkness. The Cavern is not merely a transition zone but a living archive of the world's history, holding treasures like the Magic Mirror and the Enchanted Sword within its cold embrace.

In Their Own Story

You descend past the shallow roots of the Underground, feeling the temperature shift as the dirt gives way to cool, gray stone. The darkness presses in, broken only by the soft pulse of a Blue Jellyfish drifting through an underground pool. Suddenly, the screech of a Cave Bat echoes off the walls, followed by the heavy thud of a Giant Worm bursting from the ground nearby. You draw your blade as a Skeleton Archer looms from a shadowed alcove, its bone-white form stark against the black background tiles. Deeper still, you find the warmth of a lava pool reflecting in a Gold Chest, but as you reach for it, the bound figure of a Goblin Tinkerer stirs in a distant corner, his chains clinking softly. The air hums with ancient magic here, a place where every shadow hides a trap and every chest holds a fragment of destiny.

Reader's Guide

To enter the Cavern layer, dig straight down from the surface until you pass the Underground zone; the background will shift to darker stone tiles, signaling your arrival. This massive biome extends all the way to the Underworld, featuring frequent patches of Silt, Mud, and the occasional lava pool in its lower depths.

Beware the diverse dangers lurking within: Stone Slimes, Giant Worms, and Skeletons patrol the halls, while rare enemies like the Nymph or Tim can catch you off guard. After defeating the Goblin Army, look for the Bound Goblin Tinkerer to free him, and in Hardmode, seek out the wandering Wizard.

This layer is a treasure trove for resource gathering. Harvest ores, gems, and unique materials like Silt blocks for the Extractinator. Explore Underground Cabins for early-game gear such as the Cloud in a Bottle or Hermes Boots, and hunt for rare drops like the Enchanted Sword or the Lava Charm near molten rivers. Build your base here to access these depths easily, utilizing the natural stone walls and placing traps strategically to survive the night.
