The Crimson

A fleshy scar upon the world where red veins pulse with malice

The Crimson is an evil biome with a fleshy infection, red gore theme, in contrast to the dark purple wasteland theme of its counterpart, the Corruption . Every world will contain one of the two generated randomly except for special seeds (each with a 50% chance of occurring) or chosen by the player upon world creation. Both contain similar hazards and feature their own unique enemies , items , and blocks . The tools , weapons , and armor obtained via Crimson material generally have minor advantages over those obtained via Corruption materials; however, Corruption tools are slightly faster. Crimson-themed enemies also tend to have slightly higher stats, such as health, defense, and damage. The Crimson surface contains red Crimson grass , Crimson Trees , and Vicious Mushrooms . Red thorny bushes grow on the grass and will damage the player when touched. Water in the Crimson is also red. The Crimson also contains multiple chasms , extensions of the biome into the underground. Every chasm has an entrance on the surface and leads to a large, circular cavity, then branches off into small "fingers" which end with a Crimson Heart . Crimson Altars generally line the chasm's passages, appearing inside and around it. Chasms consist of Crimstone , which can be blown up by explosives , mined with a Nightmare / Deathbringer Pickaxe or higher, or purified to Stone by using Purification Powder . The Crimson spreads, meaning it slowly converts adjacent tiles to their Crimson variants. See below for details. Chasms, Crimson Altars, and Crimson Hearts will only appear upon world generation, and will not spawn in a Crimson area that has formed through spreading. If enough Crimson manages to take over a new area, then that area will eventually adopt the Crimson's theme music, background, an

Lore & Background

Legends whisper that these chasms are not merely caves but deliberate scars carved by an ancient, slumbering entity. At the end of every branching finger lies a Crimson Heart, a throbbing organ of immense power that fuels the infection's spread. To break one is to invite chaos, for it awakens the Brain of Cthulhu, a creature of madness and flesh that guards the biome's secrets. The Crimson does not merely exist; it hungers, converting adjacent lands into its own grotesque image, turning deserts into fields of Crimsand and snows into red ice until the world itself feels as though it is rotting from the inside out.

In Their Own Story

You step onto the surface, and the air immediately grows thick with the scent of copper and decay. The grass beneath your boots is not green but a deep, arterial red, dotted with vicious mushrooms that seem to watch you with pale eyes. Suddenly, a thorny bush lashes out, its spikes drawing blood from your arm—a warning from the land itself. You descend into a chasm, your lantern casting long shadows against walls of pulsating Crimstone. The darkness here is alive. Face Monsters detach themselves from the ceiling, and Crimeras glide through the red water like sharks in a sea of gore.

Deep within a circular cavity, you find it: a Crimson Heart, beating with a rhythmic thud that echoes in your chest. As you raise your pickaxe, the heart shatters, and the ground trembles. From the shadows emerges a mass of writhing tentacles and eyes, the Brain of Cthulhu, shrieking with a sound that is not quite human. You fight for your life against the flesh and bone, dodging flying spores while Herplings scuttle from the walls. When the battle ends, you stand alone amidst the carnage, holding a Tissue Sample and a treasure bag, knowing you have only scratched the surface of this living nightmare.

Reader's Guide

The Crimson is identified by its red grass, thorny bushes, and distinct fleshy chasms leading underground. To locate it, look for the red progress bar during world generation or find the surface entrance to a large circular cavity.

Hazards include thorny bushes that damage players on contact, red water that slows movement, and aggressive enemies like Face Monsters, Crimeras, and Blood Crawlers. In Hardmode, the biome spreads rapidly, converting deserts into Crimson Deserts with Blood Mummies and snow biomes into Red Ice zones.

Harvest resources carefully: mine Crimstone with a Nightmare or Deathbringer Pickaxe to access Crimtane Ore for superior tools and armor. Break Crimson Hearts to summon the Brain of Cthulhu boss, which drops Tissue Samples for crafting and a Treasure Bag in Expert Mode containing the Brain of Confusion.

Build defensive structures using Shadewood from local trees or craft Crimson-themed furniture. Use the Clentaminator with Red Solution during Hardmode to expand the biome artificially if needed, but remember that Plantera's defeat halves its spread rate. Always carry Purification Powder to contain outbreaks.
