Lore & Background
The Ocean serves as both a sanctuary for gentle creatures like Dolphins and Sea Turtles, and a hunting ground for the ferocious. Beneath the surface, Squids ink their escape while Sea Snails retreat into their shells, yet the waters teem with peril for the unprepared. Legends speak of Water Chests hidden within underwater caves that appear only in certain worlds, guarding treasures of the deep. It is here that the mad angler seeks rare catches and where the legendary Duke Fishron may be summoned, a beast of mythic proportions rising from the abyss to challenge those who dare disturb its domain.
In Their Own Story
You step onto the warm sand as the sun dips below the horizon, casting long shadows beneath the swaying palms. The air smells of salt and kelp, heavy with the promise of adventure. As you wade into the surf, the water cools your skin, but a sudden ripple nearby freezes your blood. A sleek fin cuts through the surface, circling slowly before vanishing into the depths. You hold your breath, watching the ripples spread until a massive shadow looms beneath you—a Shark, its eyes cold and unblinking. Suddenly, a Pink Jellyfish drifts past, glowing with an eerie light that illuminates the seabed where Corals bloom like frozen fire. The tension breaks as a Dolphin breaches in the distance, leaping high above the waves, reminding you that this realm is alive with both beauty and terror. You grip your trident tight, knowing the Ocean holds secrets far deeper than the sand beneath your feet.
Reader's Guide
To reach the Ocean, travel to the extreme left or right edge of your world until the terrain flattens into a sandy beach bordered by endless water. Identify it by the presence of Palm Trees, Shell Piles, and the distinct background music that shifts as you cross the biome threshold.
Hazardous creatures patrol these waters: Crabs rush ashore while Pink Jellyfish drift dangerously underwater. Sharks lurk in the depths, capable of killing unarmored travelers instantly. Always equip Flippers, a Magic Mirror, or breathing aids like Gills Potions and the Breathing Reed to navigate safely.
Harvest resources by cutting Palm Trees for Palm Wood and collecting Seashells, Starfish, and Corals from the seabed. Dive deep to find Water Chests in natural ocean caves, which may contain rare loot like the Trident or Flipper. In Hardmode, fish for Seaside Crates; in pre-Hardmode, seek Ocean Crates for early-game gear.
Build your base here cautiously, as the biome cannot be expanded or artificially created. Use the vast open space to construct large arenas for boss fights, such as summoning Duke Fishron with a Truffle Worm. Protect the area from Corruption spread by digging vertical trenches along the beach, as horizontal gaps under the seabed will not suffice.
