Dungeon

A skeletal labyrinth where ancient curses guard treasures beyond death

The Dungeon is a vast underground labyrinth made up of Bricks that is generated on world creation, being located on either the far right or left of the map, and contains unique, mostly skeletal enemies whose spawn rates increase the deeper a player travels. It begins at an above-ground entrance structure resembling a castle, and extends down to near- Underworld depths. One Dungeon is generated in each world. Accessing the Dungeon requires first defeating Skeletron (see Access below) . The bound Mechanic is also found in the depths, and is freed when spoken to. The Dungeon can appear in one of three Dungeon Brick colors, and with one or more Dungeon Brick Wall patterns, which is randomly generated at world creation. Additionally, the Dungeon's entrance itself can vary from world to world, coming in three different variants, each containing different details. Some passages are blocked off by Cracked Dungeon Bricks . These blocks look almost identical to regular Dungeon Brick, but appear slightly crumbled, and drop no blocks when destroyed. Breaking one block may break adjacent false blocks in a chain similar to the behavior of Desert Fossil . False blocks may also break spontaneously when the player walks on them, uses a hook , or hits them with projectiles . Using a Dangersense Potion will highlight these blocks. Cracked Dungeon Bricks also conceal large, rectangular rooms lined with spikes and occasionally filled with water, so caution is advised. After Plantera is defeated, the Dungeon spawns new, more powerful enemies, which offer access to new items. Not all enemies spawn in all Dungeons: the particular background wall type generated for a particular Dungeon determine which post-Plantera enemies spawn there ( see below ). Lore & Background

Deeper than the surface stones suggest, the labyrinth descends toward the molten fires of the Underworld, a vertical descent through history and horror. Here, false walls crumble underfoot to reveal pits of spikes and stagnant water, while spectral librarians whisper forgotten spells from crumbling tomes. The air grows thick with static and malice as one ventures downward, for the deeper the traveler goes, the more potent the ancient magic becomes. Only after the great beast Plantera falls does the dungeon truly awaken, its shadows birthing new horrors that test even the most seasoned warriors. It is a place where gold keys unlock secrets of power, but also where the Bone Key hangs as a grim reminder of those who fell before.

In Their Own Story

You stand before the castle-like entrance, the Old Man's gaze fixed upon you with an intensity that feels centuries old. Night falls, and the air chills as you speak the words to summon the curse. The transformation is swift and terrifying; the frail figure expands into the floating skull of Skeletron, bones rattling in a chaotic dance of death. You fight through the swirling hands, your sword glowing against the dark, until finally, the beast shatters into dust. Silence returns, but it is a heavy silence. Stepping inside, you hear the clatter of armor and the hiss of magic. A skeleton archer turns its hollow eyes toward you, and you realize the entrance was merely the beginning. Every step deeper reveals new traps: pressure plates wired to dart shooters, cracked bricks that hide deadly drops. You find a locked chest, golden and ornate, but it demands a key found only in the pockets of your fallen foes. As you descend, the walls seem to breathe, the background shifting to reveal factions of armored bones and ragged casters waiting for their next victim.

Reader's Guide

Locate the Dungeon on the far left or right edge of the map; it begins at the surface with a castle-like structure and descends deep underground. Do not venture past depth -1 before defeating Skeletron, summoned by the Old Man at night, or you will be instantly killed by the invincible Dungeon Guardian.

The interior is filled with unique enemies like Angry Bones, Dark Casters, and Cracked Bricks that hide spike traps. Use a Dangersense Potion to reveal these false blocks. After defeating Plantera, new powerful enemies spawn based on the specific background wall patterns found in different sections of the dungeon.

Harvest resources by breaking shelves for Books, Lesser Potions, and rare Water Bolts. Explore Locked Gold Chests using Golden Keys dropped by enemies or found in chests. Unlock Biome Chests only after Plantera's defeat with corresponding Biome Keys. Retrieve unique loot like the Muramasa, Cobalt Shield, and Water Bolt spellbook to build your arsenal.

The dungeon also houses the Bound Mechanic for rescue and various mechanisms like Chain Lanterns and Dart Traps that can be harvested for base building or study.
