The Aether

A forgotten realm of starlight hidden deep within the caverns

The Aether is a mini-biome that can be found in the outer fifth of the world in the Underground or Cavern layers. It is generated once upon world creation and is always located on the same side of the world as the Jungle biome. The biome features a large pool of Shimmer in its center that is surrounded by a few Gem Trees . Faelings occasionally fly above the pool. Players can also create artificial Aether biomes by placing Shimmer in the Underground or Cavern layers. An Aether biome requires at least 300 tiles of Shimmer. While in the Aether, a unique background effect shows the star-filled sky of Space , with multicolored stars, blackening the entire background but the stars. This effect will also display over tiles that are in complete darkness. - 1 Contents - 2 Notes 2.1 Generation 2.1.1 Zones - 3 Tips - 4 Trivia - 5 History - 6 References

Lore & Background

In the deepest recesses of the world, where stone gives way to the void, lies a sanctuary known only as The Aether. It is a place untouched by the Corruption or Crimson, a pristine pocket of reality generated alongside the Jungle on the opposite side of creation. Here, the oppressive darkness of the caverns dissolves into a celestial night sky, not above but all around, filled with multicolored stars that burn against the blackened backdrop even in total shadow. This is the domain of Shimmer, the transformative liquid at the heart of existence, pooling in a vast, iridescent lake that defies the laws of physics and biology alike.

Ancient texts suggest this biome was not merely formed but summoned by the world's own latent magic, serving as a cradle for life before the Moon Lord's fall. It is the only natural source of Shimmer in pre-hardmode worlds, a finite wellspring guarded by ethereal Faelings and the peculiar Slimes that emerge from it. The air hums with a quiet energy, distinct from the damp chill of the underground, offering a glimpse into the cosmic order where gems grow as trees and gravity feels like a suggestion rather than a rule.

In Their Own Story

You descend past the familiar strata of stone and ore, your pickaxe echoing in the silence. The Guide's cryptic name led you here, to the outer fifth of the world, deep beneath the surface layer. Suddenly, the gloom breaks. A soft, pearlescent glow illuminates the cavern wall, revealing a pool that does not reflect the ceiling but instead mirrors a star-filled sky. You step forward, and the background dissolves into an endless night of multicolored stars, pressing against your vision from every angle.

Above the shimmering water, Faelings dance in silent arcs, their light weaving through the air like living constellations. A Shimmer Slime bobs gently on the surface, its form shifting as if made of liquid starlight itself. You reach out to touch the liquid, feeling a strange warmth that defies the cold cavern air. In this moment, time seems suspended; the world above is forgotten, replaced by this pocket of celestial wonder where stone trees bear gems and the sky exists beneath your feet.

Reader's Guide

To find The Aether, descend into the Underground or Cavern layers on the same side as the Jungle biome, ensuring you are at least 50 tiles below the surface and well above the world's bottom edge. Look for a large pool of Shimmer surrounded by Gem Trees; if generated correctly, the background will darken to reveal a starry sky regardless of lighting conditions.

The primary hazard is environmental rather than combat-based: before defeating the Moon Lord, the Shimmer here is finite and cannot be replenished once collected. Be cautious not to waste it, as it is your only natural source until the Bottomless Shimmer Bucket becomes available post-Moon Lord. Faelings are harmless, but slimes entering the liquid transform into rare Shimmer Slimes.

Harvest the unique resources carefully: collect Shimmer for transmuting items and transforming enemies, and explore the Gem Trees for valuable minerals. You can also create artificial Aether biomes by placing 300 tiles of Shimmer in valid underground layers to replicate this background effect anywhere. Consider building a base here using the Aether Monolith to control the unique sky backdrop or as a dedicated transformation station for your most powerful gear.
