Spider Nest
A pitch-black labyrinth where cobwebs regenerate and hollow shells await the unwary
Stay away from the spiders. They'll suck out your insides and leave you a hollow shell of a man. Trust me on this one. — The Skeleton Merchant Spider Nests , also known as Spider Caves or Spider Caverns , are mini-biomes located in the Cavern layer . They feature distinct almost pitch-black Spider Walls and there are numerous Cobwebs filling the area. The Spider Walls make Cobwebs rapidly grow back, which is a unique feature of the biome. Spider Nests can rarely contain Web Covered Chests . The Webbed Stylist NPC can also spawn here. - 1 Contents - 2 Notes - 3 Achievements - 4 Tips - 5 Trivia - 6 History
Lore & Background
Deep within the crushing dark of the Cavern layer lies a forgotten sanctuary of silk and shadow, known to the wary as the Spider Nest. Here, the very air feels thick with unseen threads, and the background walls are not stone but a churning mass of spider-fabric that defies nature. It is said that the Skeleton Merchant himself speaks in hushed tones of this place, warning travelers that the arachnids within do not merely kill; they drain the life from their victims until only a hollowed husk remains, draped in the very webs that birthed them.
The Nest is a self-sustaining nightmare where cobwebs grow with unnatural speed, fed by the unique background walls that pulse with a silent, hungry energy. Unlike other caverns where debris is cleared by pick and hammer, here the silence is broken only by the skitter of legs and the soft tear of silk. Rarely does this biome appear near the surface unless the world itself has been twisted by The Constant, but when found in the deep dark, it offers a grim treasure: the Webbed Chest and the strange, web-covered corpse that serves as a monument to those who failed to heed the warning.
To enter is to step into a living trap where the environment itself conspires against you. The walls whisper of ancient hunger, and the floor is a treacherous maze of sticky traps designed to slow the movement of any intruder. It is a place where the boundary between geology and biology blurs, creating a domain ruled by the Black Recluse and the Wall Creeper, guardians of a realm where death comes not with a scream, but with a suffocating embrace.
In Their Own Story
The torchlight flickers, casting long, dancing shadows against walls that seem to breathe. You have descended too far, past the familiar stone into a domain where the darkness feels heavier, pressing against your skin like wet silk. Suddenly, a skittering sound echoes from above, not of rock falling, but of many legs moving in unison across the ceiling. You look up and see them: a web-covered chest resting on a ledge, surrounded by a dense fog of cobwebs that seem to regenerate before your eyes.
A Black Recluse drops silently from the gloom, its body a silhouette against the faint glow of your lantern. It does not rush; it knows you cannot escape easily. The air grows thick with sticky threads as more spiders emerge from the shadows, their movements fluid and terrifyingly precise. You swing your weapon, but the cobwebs slow your strike, the world turning into a blur of motion and silk. As the first bite lands, a cold numbness spreads through your veins, a hollowing sensation that matches the Skeleton Merchant's grim tale. The last thing you see is not the spider, but your own reflection in its eyes—a hollow shell waiting to be filled with more silk.
Reader's Guide
To locate a Spider Nest, venture deep into the Cavern layer and scan for distinct pitch-black background walls and dense clusters of cobwebs. The Dangersense Potion is invaluable here, as it highlights the sticky traps that define this biome. These nests are massive, spanning between 500 to nearly 3500 tiles, and while rare in Glowing Mushroom biomes, they can occasionally appear near the surface if The Constant has corrupted the world.
The primary hazards are the Wall Creeper, Black Recluse, Web Slinger, and the venomous Poison Staff wielded by enemies. Spiders spawn rapidly due to the unique wall tiles, making navigation difficult without proper preparation. To survive, avoid running blindly; instead, clear a path or use ropes and torches on background walls to stop cobwebs from regenerating during vertical descents like hellevators.
For resources, harvest the rare Webbed Chest for exclusive loot and collect the Spider Fang and Fried Egg dropped by enemies. The Webbed Stylist NPC can also be found here, offering unique cosmetics. If you seek profit, consider mining out all non-wall tiles to create a controlled farming zone where spiders cannot escape but you can safely eliminate them. Alternatively, construct three-block-high diagonal tunnels with sloped floors; this geometry allows player passage while trapping spiders inside, turning the biome into a safe grinding arena.
Did You Know?
- Removing all background wall tiles with a hammer effectively destroys the Spider Nest biome and stops cobweb regeneration.
- In worlds with The Constant enabled, Spider Nests can generate at or near the surface rather than in the Cavern layer.
- Cobwebs destroyed in front of Spider Walls only have a 25% chance to drop an item, unlike standard cobwebs which always drop one.
- The biome size is strictly defined between 500 and 3499 tiles, ensuring it is neither too small nor infinitely large.
