Space
The silent void above the clouds where gravity surrenders to the stars
Space is the layer making up the top of the world, above the Surface . Gravity is decreased in Space, which means the player can jump higher and will fall slower, similar to the Featherfall effect. The sky is dark and stars are visible, even when the sun is still up. There are no naturally occurring blocks or objects in Space, although Floating Island or Living Tree parts may extend into it. Despite being at such high altitudes, players that enter Space do not experience any consequences. They will neither incur the Suffocation debuff nor will the breath meter appear. Fallen Stars spawn in Space and can appear inside structures made at high altitudes. Harpies and, in Hardmode , Wyverns spawn in Space. Additionally, Martian Probes are more likely to spawn in Space and common enemies such as slimes and Zombies can also appear in Space, given a viable area to spawn on. The Forest Pylon can be used in Space. - 1 Contents - 2 Notes - 3 Achievements - 4 Tips - 5 Trivia - 6 History - 7 References
Lore & Background
Rise beyond the verdant canopy and the crushing weight of the earth, for here lies the Space biome, a realm where the laws of physics bend to the will of the cosmos. In this celestial layer, the sun burns with cold indifference while a tapestry of eternal stars watches over the world, visible even in the brightest noon. Gravity loosens its grip, allowing travelers to leap with impossible grace and drift downward like autumn leaves caught in an updraft. Though no native soil exists here, floating islands and ancient trees sometimes pierce this sky-bound frontier, offering rare footholds in the endless dark.
This is not merely a high altitude but a gateway to the unknown, where the air does not thin enough to suffocate the living, yet new terrors take flight. Harpies patrol these heights with razor wings, and in the age of Hardmode, the serpentine Wyvern coils through the ether, guarding secrets hidden among the clouds. Fallen stars rain from this domain, marking the boundary between the mundane world below and the infinite expanse above. It is a place of paradoxical safety and danger, where one can stand atop a floating island and gaze into the abyss without fear of falling forever, provided they respect the creatures born of the void.
In Their Own Story
You ascend past the highest cloud layer, the air growing crisp yet breathable, defying the suffocation that should claim you. Below, the world is a patchwork of green and brown, but above, only an infinite canvas of deep indigo stretches out, dotted with stars that do not twinkle but stare with ancient intensity. Suddenly, a shadow breaks the silence—a Harpy screeches, its wings beating against the thin air as it dives from the darkness. You feel lighter than ever, your boots barely touching the ground as you leap to evade, rising higher with each bound.
As you stabilize on a floating island's edge, a low rumble vibrates through the soles of your feet. From the starry depths emerges a Wyvern, its serpentine body coiling like a living storm, eyes glowing with primordial rage. The beast circles, testing your resolve, while fallen stars begin to drift down around you, their tails trailing light in the gloom. You draw your weapon, heart pounding not from lack of air but from the sheer awe of standing where few have dared. Here, between the earth and the void, you are neither hunter nor prey, but a witness to the sky's silent, deadly majesty.
Reader's Guide
To reach Space, climb high enough that the sky turns dark and stars appear even during the day. There is no sharp border; the transition is smooth based on your world's height percentage. Use wings, rocket boots, ropes, or Gravitation Potions to ascend. Once in Space, you can jump higher and fall slower due to reduced gravity.
Be aware of the hazards: Harpies spawn here constantly, while Wyverns appear only in Hardmode. Martian Probes are also more likely to spawn in this biome. Note that in pre-Hardmode, enemies cannot spawn in the central 10% of the world horizontally.
Harvest resources by collecting Fallen Stars and defeating enemies for Giant Harpy Feathers, Souls of Flight, and Wyverntails (Hardmode). Fish here using a pure Space biome to catch unique species like Cloudfish and Angelfish. You can also build structures or use the Forest Pylon for travel. The lack of suffocation means you can explore freely without breath concerns.
