Skeletron
The cursed guardian of the Dungeon waits for the brave to lift his veil
Skeletron is a pre-Hardmode boss . Defeating Skeletron for the first time grants unlimited access to all Dungeon areas for players within the current world and allows the Clothier NPC to move into an available vacant house . If attempting to enter the Dungeon before killing Skeletron, Dungeon Guardians spawn once a player reaches 0 depth . These enemies deal 9,999 damage and generally kill any player in a single hit. Managing to defeat a Dungeon Guardian does not grant access to the Dungeon, thus defeating Skeletron is mandatory for accessing the Dungeon safely. While Skeletron is alive, its exclusive music Skeletron will play. When Otherworldly music is enabled, the track Boss 1 (Otherworldly) will play instead. - Item (Quantity) Rate - Healing Potion (5–15) 100% - One of the following 3 items may be dropped - Skeletron Mask 14.29% - Skeletron Hand 12.24% - Book of Skulls 10.5% - Skeletron Trophy 10% - Chippy's Couch 14.29% - Treasure Bag (Skeletron) 100% - Bone Glove 100% - One of the following three items will be dropped - Skeletron Mask 33% - Skeletron Hand 33% - Book of Skulls 33% - Coins ( 12 GC 50 SC ) 100% - Possessed Skull 25% - Skeletron Relic 100% - When Hellforge is not present - Hellforge 100% - Skull - Internal NPC ID : 35 - Internal Buff ID : 30 - Internal Projectile ID : 270 - Internal NPC ID : 36 - Internal Buff ID : 32 - 1 Summoning - 2 Behavior 2.1 Expert Mode - 3 Red Hat variant - 4 Aftermath - 5 Notes - 6 Achievements - 7 Tips - 8 Trivia - 9 History - 10 References

Lore & Background
Long before the walls of stone were raised by human hands, a skeletal entity known only as Skeletron guarded the secrets buried beneath the earth. This ancient curse binds the Old Man to the dungeon's threshold, a spectral prisoner whose existence is tied to the safety of those who dare approach. To enter without first breaking this bond invites the wrath of the Dungeon Guardian, a being of such terrible power that even the slightest touch ends a life in an instant. The guardian does not merely protect; it enforces a law written in bone and blood, ensuring that only the worthy may tread upon the treasures hidden within.
When night falls and the Old Man offers his curse, the air grows heavy with the weight of history. Skeletron rises from the shadows, a floating skull flanked by grasping hands that tear through the darkness. It is a creature of duality, alternating between a menacing dance of slashing limbs and a terrifying spin that strips away all defenses. Defeating this entity does more than clear a path; it breaks the ancient spell, freeing the Old Man to become the Clothier and granting safe passage into the labyrinthine depths below.
In Their Own Story
You stand before the crumbling archway as twilight bleeds into night, the Old Man's hollow eyes fixed upon you. He offers only one choice: accept the curse or turn back forever. You choose the former. With a sudden crack of bone against stone, his form dissolves into swirling dust, and Skeletron erupts from the earth. The skull hovers above, its eye sockets burning with cold fire while two spectral hands lash out at your flank. You dodge the first swipe, feeling the wind of its passage, but the second hand grazes your shoulder, sapping your strength with a slow, creeping numbness.
The beast roars, a sound like grinding tectonic plates, and shifts into its spinning phase. The skull becomes a blur of white bone, hurtling toward you with terrifying speed. You leap over a block, heart pounding as the defenseless head rushes past, leaving it vulnerable to your strikes. But time is against you; the first hint of dawn creeps over the horizon. The entity shrieks, its form hardening into something far more lethal, moving with the speed of death itself. You must end this now, or become another skeleton in the pile.
Reader's Guide
Summon Skeletron by speaking to the Old Man at the Dungeon entrance during night and selecting "Curse." Alternatively, kill the Clothier at night while wearing a Clothier Voodoo Doll. Prepare an arena with multiple layers of platforms spanning at least 50 tiles horizontally to facilitate vertical movement, as Skeletron can pass through blocks.
Use ranged or magic weapons for safety, though melee is viable with mobility gear like Wings or Hermes Boots. Avoid the hands first if you are confident in dodging; they deal less damage but inflict Slow and Bleeding. If attacking the head directly, exploit its spinning phase where defense drops to zero in Classic Mode.
In Expert Mode, prioritize destroying both hands quickly to stop homing skull projectiles and reduce the head's massive initial defense. Watch for the roar signaling a phase shift; retreat during the spin attack if your health is low. Never linger near sunrise, as Skeletron enrages with 9,999 damage and defense.
