Flying Dutchman

A spectral galleon wreathed in gold sails the skies to unleash doom

The Flying Dutchman is a Hardmode mini-boss that spawns during the Pirate Invasion event . The Flying Dutchman emits golden particles while hovering approximately 26 tiles above the player, and is armed with four cannons that fire explosive cannonballs toward the nearest player while occasionally spawning standard Pirate Invasion enemies that fall from the deck and onto solid ground. The boss will be defeated and drop loot upon depleting the health of all four cannons. The Flying Dutchman does not disappear after the Pirate Invasion is over (though it will explode if it has not been engaged before the invasion ends), and defeating the Flying Dutchman will not end the invasion. Several Flying Dutchmen can appear during a single Pirate Invasion, or none at all. They only appear when the event progress has passed 50%, and where there is at least 40×30 tiles space. - Item (Quantity) Rate - Coin Gun 2% - Barrel Launcher 10% - Lucky Coin 6.67% - Discount Card 6.67% - Pirate Staff 6.67% - Gold Ring 6.67% - The Dutchman 5% - Cutlass 10% - Golden furniture (1 piece) 100% - Flying Dutchman Trophy 10% - Flying Dutchman Relic 100% - The Black Spot 25% - Internal NPC ID : 491 - 1 Parts - 2 Notes - 3 Tips - 4 Trivia - 5 History - 6 References

Lore & Background

When the Pirate Invasion breaches the world's defenses with overwhelming force, the seas themselves seem to boil as a phantom vessel rises from the ether. The Flying Dutchman is no mere ship of wood and canvas, but a cursed leviathan of Hardmode terror that hovers eternally above the fray. Its sails billow not with wind, but with an unnatural golden luminescence, marking it as the ultimate arbiter of plunder. Legends say this ghostly galleon appears only when the invaders face true resistance, summoned by desperate captains to turn the tide with devastating firepower.

The deck of this spectral vessel is a churning mass of violence, where four massive cannons roar in unison, spitting explosive cannonballs that tear through stone and flesh alike. Yet, it is not just its artillery that strikes fear into the hearts of heroes; from its timbers, legions of pirates fall like rain to swarm the ground below. The captain of this dread fleet remains unseen, commanding a force that cannot be quelled until every cannon is silenced. To defeat it is to halt the invasion's momentum, though the ship itself lingers as a reminder that some curses never truly end.

Those who gaze upon its golden hull too long may find themselves haunted by the promise of riches or ruin. The vessel does not vanish with the fading of the event; it waits, suspended in the sky, until challenged or until time runs out and it explodes into nothingness. It is a paradox of survival, spawning again and again as long as the invasion rages, a relentless engine of chaos that demands respect before it yields its legendary treasures.

In Their Own Story

The sky above your fortress turns a bruised purple as the air grows thick with salt and ozone. Suddenly, a golden glow pierces the gloom, revealing the silhouette of a massive galleon drifting silently twenty-six tiles overhead. It is the Flying Dutchman, a ghost ship that defies gravity, its sails shimmering with an eerie, radiant light. Four great cannons swivel toward you with mechanical precision, their muzzles glowing red-hot before unleashing a barrage of explosive cannonballs that shatter the stone beneath your feet.

You watch in awe as spectral pirates tumble from the ship's deck, crashing onto the ground to join the fray below, while the vessel itself hovers just out of reach. The roar of the cannons drowns out all other sound, a rhythmic thunder that shakes your very bones. You realize too late that this is not a battle you can win by standing still; the ship moves with a grace that belies its size, drifting lazily while raining destruction upon your position. As you dodge the falling debris and exploding rounds, you see the golden particles swirling around the hull, marking it as something ancient and terrible.

With a cry of defiance, you raise your weapon, aiming not at the ship's hull but at the four cannons that serve as its heart. Each shot you land sends a spark of orange light across the darkened sky, chipping away at the vessel's immortality. The ship groans, a sound like tearing timber and snapping rigging, as it begins to list in the air. Finally, with one last explosive volley, the cannons fall silent, and the golden glow fades, leaving only the drifting sails of a defeated legend hanging motionless against the twilight.

Reader's Guide

The Flying Dutchman spawns naturally during a Pirate Invasion once event progress exceeds 50%. It requires a clear space of at least 40x30 tiles to appear. If you move too far away, it will despawn, but killing it does not end the invasion; in fact, defeating one adds only 5.55% to event completion. Multiple Dutchmen can spawn during a single event, or none may appear at all.

Prepare an arena with horizontal platforms spaced about 10-12 tiles apart to allow vertical movement while keeping you within the ship's engagement range. You must remain close enough to prevent despawning but high enough to avoid ground-spawned pirates if possible. The boss cannot move down through platforms, which can be exploited for safety.

Focus your fire on the four cannons first; destroying all four defeats the boss. Use weapons that hit multiple targets or have piercing capabilities like the Daedalus Stormbow, Meteor Staff, or summoning weapons such as the Nimbus Rod. Position yourself where you can strike the ship while remaining out of range of its cannonballs. A long minecart track is excellent for dodging attacks while maintaining offense.

Be aware that the boss will explode if the event ends before it is engaged. To farm loot efficiently, lure Dutchmen above a lava pit or trap to stop them from moving while you attack safely.
