Celestial Pillars

Four ancient sentinels descend to harvest the world's essence

Where the heck did those Pillars come from?! You should clear out some of the monsters around them! — The Guide The Celestial Pillars (also known as the Lunar Pillars , Lunar Towers , or Celestial Towers ) are four late- Hardmode , stationary bosses that appear during the Lunar Events after the Lunatic Cultist has been defeated. To break their protective shields, 100 of the unique enemies that spawn in a large surrounding area must be defeated. Pillars drop Lunar Fragments when destroyed, and destroying all four of them results in the spawn of the Moon Lord . The four Celestial Pillars are the Solar Pillar , the Vortex Pillar , the Nebula Pillar , and the Stardust Pillar . They represent the four damage types in Terraria : Solar for melee , Vortex for ranged , Nebula for magic , and Stardust for summon . After the defeat of the Lunatic Cultist, they appear at four locations equally spaced across the map (see pillar spawning mechanics below) , and do not move apart from slowly bobbing up and down in place. Each pillar takes control of the world in a circular area around it with a radius of 250 tiles (500 feet ). When the player is in that affected area, the background will change to a pillar-specific one, and only pillar-specific enemies will spawn in large numbers. Initially, each Celestial Pillar has a large shield around it which prevents it from taking any damage. In order to remove the shield, the player must kill 100 enemies corresponding to that specific pillar, which are the major threat of the Lunar Events; they can deal high amounts of damage, inflict debuffs , and easily swarm the player if not dealt with quickly. The enemy kill count does not reset if the player dies , but leaving the world does reset it. Defeating pillar-specific enemies releases small red e

Lore & Background

When the Lunatic Cultist falls, the sky fractures as four colossal pillars pierce the heavens, anchoring themselves with impossible stillness. These Celestial Towers are not mere structures but living conduits of cosmic power, each representing a fundamental damage type that shreds reality: Solar for melee fury, Vortex for ranged precision, Nebula for arcane might, and Stardust for summoned swarms. They arrive from the void to harvest the planet's life force, their protective shields humming with an energy that no weapon can pierce until the tide of their alien legions is broken.

The world bends to their will within a five-hundred-foot radius, where familiar biomes vanish and are replaced by surreal, pillar-specific landscapes. Here, the air crackles with hostile intent as unique horrors spawn in endless waves, driven solely to protect their masters. The ground trembles under the weight of Crawltipedes seeking airborne prey, while lightning portals tear open above to rain destruction upon the unwary. These entities are the final gatekeepers before the Moon Lord himself descends, demanding that a hundred souls from each legion be sacrificed to lower their shields.

Legends whisper that destroying all four pillars does not bring peace, but summons the ultimate horror of the cosmos. The fragments they drop when finally shattered hold the key to forging weapons capable of challenging the god who watches from beyond the stars. Until then, the pillars stand as silent, bobbing monoliths, their shields unbreakable, waiting for a hero brave enough to face the swarm and claim the right to end it all.

In Their Own Story

The sky turned a bruised purple as the first pillar erupted from the earth, its surface shimmering with an alien geometry that hurt the eyes. You stood at the edge of the fifty-foot radius where reality warped, watching as Crawltipedes uncoiled from the ground like serpents made of rusted iron and fire. They ignored you while your feet touched dirt, but the moment you jumped, their red eyes locked on, their massive bodies surging upward with terrifying speed.

You scrambled for a skybridge, safe from the claws below, yet Selenians materialized in the air, their shields deflecting your arrows back into your flesh. The world was a cacophony of screeching horns and crackling lightning as Alien Hornets swarmed from the Vortex tower's swirling portals. You took cover behind a stone wall, watching Storm Divers fire shotgun blasts that could only be avoided by moving vertically, the Distorted debuff making your movements sluggish and clumsy.

With a deep breath, you realized the true nature of this trial. It was not about brute force but survival against an endless tide. You summoned your dragon staff, its spectral heads tearing through the fragile tails of the Crawltipedes, while your ranged weapon locked onto charging Corites to halt their advance. The shield above you flickered as the hundredth enemy fell, the barrier dissolving into dust. As the pillar crumbled and dropped a glowing fragment, you knew the true horror was yet to come.

Reader's Guide

Summoning this event requires defeating the Lunatic Cultist, which triggers the immediate appearance of four stationary pillars spaced equally across the map. To damage them, you must first breach their protective shields by killing exactly one hundred enemies specific to each pillar's zone within a 250-tile radius.

For arena preparation, construct elevated platforms or skybridges to avoid ground swarms, but ensure you have vertical mobility to dodge lightning strikes and airborne threats. The Solar Pillar demands staying grounded or using water pools with Neptune's Shell to bypass Crawltipedes that only target flying players. Build two-story structures near the spawn edge to funnel enemies into kill zones.

Class-specific tactics vary significantly. Melee users should avoid non-rocket projectiles against Selenians to prevent reflected damage, while summoners must aim at the tail ends of Crawltipedes for efficient clearing. Ranged players can lock Corites in place with continuous fire, and magic users should utilize homing weapons if they possess vertical speed gear like the Soaring Insignia.

During the battle, prioritize killing enemies that inflict debilitating debuffs like Distorted from Alien Queens before engaging the shield. Once a pillar's shield drops, focus fire immediately to claim its Lunar Fragment. Remember that leaving the world resets your kill count, so persistence is key.
