Eye of Cthulhu
A scrawny child stands alone against the gaze of a cosmic horror.
I hope a scrawny kid like you isn't all that is standing between us and Cthulhu's Eye. — The Merchant The Eye of Cthulhu is a pre-Hardmode boss . It is typically one of the first bosses a player may encounter, as it spawns automatically when a relatively early level of game advancement is achieved. It can also be summoned manually with the Suspicious Looking Eye at night (see Summoning and spawning below) . While the Eye of Cthulhu is alive, its exclusive music Boss 1 will play. When Otherworldly music is enabled, the track Boss 1 (Otherworldly) will play instead. - Internal NPC ID : 4 - Item (Quantity) Rate - Badger's Hat (when defeated on the same day as the Wall of Flesh ) 100% - Binoculars 2.5% - Unholy Arrow (20–50) 100% - Only in Corrupt worlds - Demonite Ore (30–90) 100% - Corrupt Seeds (1–3) 100% - Demon Altar (when no altar is placed in world with additional conditions ) 100% - Only in Crimson worlds - Crimtane Ore (30–90) 100% - Crimson Seeds (1–3) 100% - Crimson Altar (when no altar is placed in world with additional conditions ) 100% - Lesser Healing Potion (5–15) 100% - Eye of Cthulhu Mask 14.29% - Eye of Cthulhu Trophy 10% - Treasure Bag (Eye of Cthulhu) 100% - Shield of Cthulhu 100% - Eye of Cthulhu Mask 14.29% - Binoculars 3.33% - Coins ( 7 GC 50 SC ) 100% - Unholy Arrow (20–50) 100% - Only in Corrupt worlds - Demonite Ore (30–90) 100% - Corrupt Seeds (1–3) 100% - Only in Crimson worlds - Crimtane Ore (30–90) 100% - Crimson Seeds (1–3) 100% - Eye of Cthulhu Relic 100% - 0x33's Aviators 100% - Suspicious Grinning Eye 25% - Internal NPC ID : 4 - 1 Summoning and spawning - 2 Behavior 2.1 Expert Mode - 3 Aftermath - 4 Notes - 5 Achievements - 6 Tips - 7 Trivia - 8 Gallery - 9 See also - 10 History - 11 References

Lore & Background
Before the world hardened into stone and steel, something ancient watched from the void between stars. The Eye of Cthulhu is not merely a monster but a fragment of that distant terror, drawn to worlds where life has begun to coalesce yet remains fragile. It arrives when four souls gather under the moonlight, their collective presence signaling a vulnerability that invites the gaze of the Old One. The Merchant's warning echoes through time: even the smallest voice can stand against this looming dread, though few survive the encounter without scars upon their spirit.
When night falls and the air grows heavy with an unspoken malice, the Eye descends, its massive form blotting out the stars. It does not hunger for flesh but for the potential of worlds it might corrupt or consume. Servants of Cthulhu swarm like moths to a dying flame, dropping hearts and stardust in their wake, only to vanish into the darkness they came from. The creature shifts between phases with terrifying grace, first a floating sentinel spawning minions, then a frenzied maw charging through the earth itself. To face it is to confront the very concept of cosmic indifference made manifest.
Victory brings more than loot; it marks the world's transition from infancy to adolescence. Defeating the Eye unlocks new possibilities: the Dryad arrives to heal the land, the Traveling Merchant reveals strange wares, and the Angler begins asking for fish that swim among clouds. Yet the memory of that night remains etched in the soil, a reminder that even in this world of blocks and pixels, something far older than humanity still watches.
In Their Own Story
You stand on the edge of your wooden platform as the sun dips below the horizon. The air grows cold, though no wind stirs. Then it comes—the message that chills your blood: "You feel an evil presence watching you..." Eighty-one minutes later, at exactly 8:51 PM, the sky tears open.
The Eye of Cthulhu looms above, a colossal iris surrounded by writhing tentacles. It hovers silently for a moment before unleashing its servants. Three or four smaller eyes detach from its form, darting toward you with unsettling purpose. You swing your sword, dispatching them as they explode into hearts and stars, but the main eye is already charging. It rams through your dirt walls as if they were mist, forcing you to sprint upward.
As its health dwindles below half, the Eye transforms. The iris splits open into a gaping maw lined with teeth, and a deafening roar shakes the ground. Now it charges relentlessly, three times in succession, each impact sending shockwaves through your bones. In Expert Mode, the pattern intensifies—a rapid chain of dashes that leaves no room for error. You dodge left, then right, weaving between its attacks as the world blurs around you.
With a final strike, the Eye shatters into light and loot. The silence returns, but something has changed. The Dryad will come tomorrow; the Merchant will offer new tools. You survived the gaze of Cthulhu, but the stars still watch.
Reader's Guide
Summon the Eye of Cthulhu either manually with a Suspicious Looking Eye at night (after 7:30 PM) or wait for natural spawning conditions: 200+ max health, 10+ defense, and four town NPCs present. Natural spawns are announced by "You feel an evil presence watching you..." and occur exactly 81 minutes later if players remain on the Surface.
Prepare a flat arena with at least two layers of platforms spaced vertically to dodge charges. Remove background walls near the fight zone to prevent Servants from getting stuck. Bring Healing Potions, bows or swords for ranged/melee builds, and magic weapons with homing capabilities for mage classes. Rangers should favor high-damage arrows like Unholy Arrows.
In Phase 1, dodge the Eye's three consecutive charges while avoiding its spawned Servants of Cthulhu. Keep moving horizontally to maintain distance. In Phase 2 (below 50% health), the Eye transforms into a maw and charges more aggressively. Do not stop moving; time your jumps carefully as it becomes faster and less predictable. In Expert Mode, anticipate rapid chain dashes that replace standard attacks near death.
If dawn approaches or all players die, the Eye will despawn. Never retreat underground completely during natural spawns or you may prevent its arrival.
