Lore & Background

When the moon bleeds orange and the air grows thick with the scent of rotting pumpkins, the Mourning Wood awakens from its slumber. Born of the same cursed soil as the Everscream, this colossal entity rises during the Pumpkin Moon not merely to feed, but to mourn a world it seeks to cleanse in flame. It is said that these towering murder trees do not simply grow; they are summoned by grief and rage, snapping cuttings from their own gnarled bodies to birth lesser Splinterlings, ensuring their nightmare legacy spreads through the earth.

In Their Own Story

The pumpkin moon hangs heavy above, casting a sickly amber glow over the wooden arena. You hear it before you see it—a deep, rhythmic thudding that vibrates through your boots. Then, from the darkness between two torches, the Mourning Wood emerges. It is a monstrosity of twisted bark and shadow, its branches writhing like serpents. As it lumbers forward, the air grows hot, smelling of sulfur and burnt sugar.

Reader's Guide

To summon the Mourning Wood, you must survive until Wave 6 or higher during the Pumpkin Moon event, which is triggered by using a Pumpkin Moon Medallion at night in any biome. The boss spawns automatically as part of the wave progression, so no specific player interaction beyond surviving previous waves is required.

Arena preparation is critical due to its ability to shoot through blocks. Construct an open arena with horizontal platforms and avoid small enclosed rooms. Digging a water-filled trench is highly effective; while Flaming Wood passes through water, Greek Fire cannot, allowing you to safely attack the boss from underwater or behind a water barrier.

The Mourning Wood alternates between two attacks: straight-line volleys of Flaming Wood that ignore blocks, and gravity-affected jets of Greek Fire that linger on the ground. Watch for its pause in movement as a cue to dodge. When it stops walking, immediately move laterally or vertically to avoid the incoming volley.

For combat tactics, use water to negate the Greek Fire threat entirely. If playing with a melee class, the North Pole is an exceptional tool; aim it above the boss so snowflakes rain down continuously. As the Mourning Wood takes damage, its movement speed increases significantly, requiring faster reflexes. In Expert Mode, prioritize dodging to secure the Witch's Broom drop, and ensure you are in Wave 12 or higher for guaranteed loot drops.
