Zombie
Shambling guardians of the night who test your shelter before dawn.
The Zombie is a common pre-Hardmode enemy that spawns on the surface at night , and is a primary reason newer players will want to build a shelter before night arrives. Along with Demon Eyes , they are generally among the first nighttime enemies a player will encounter, as they appear in areas a player first spawns . Zombies follow the Fighter AI and walk towards the player, dealing damage on contact. They can jump and navigate platforms . Zombies will seem to hit closed doors and Tall Gates (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) in their path repeatedly, though most of them cannot open them unless it is a Blood Moon (any regular and Blood Zombies (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) that spawn during which are all able to open doors/Tall Gates); Spore Zombies and Maggot Zombies (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) can open doors and Tall Gates at any time. See Fighter AI for more details. In Expert Mode (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) , Armed Zombies that carry disembodied arms will spawn. When they are close to the player, they will stop to perform a special "claw attack" which extends their attack range and deals more damage to the player. These arm-wielding zombies are unable to open or interact with doors at any time. The Armed Zombie Statue can spawn regular Armed Zombies in any difficulty. - Item (Quantity) Rate - Shackle 2% - Zombie Arm 0.4% - Spiffo Plush (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) 0.07% - 1 Variants - 2 Other Zombies - 3 Notes - 4 Tips 4.1 Blood Moon - 5 Trivia 5.1 Bestiary entries - 6 See also - 7 History - 8 References

Lore & Background
As the sun dips below the horizon and the world plunges into shadow, the dead rise to reclaim the earth. These rotting wanderers are among the first terrors a traveler meets in Terraria, their groans signaling that safety lies only within sturdy walls. Unlike mindless beasts, they possess a dark cunning; during the crimson horror of a Blood Moon, they learn to pry open doors, turning the simple wooden barriers of home into no more than flimsy invitations for the hungry horde.
Yet, not all who shuffle in the dark are equal. Some carry severed arms as grisly weapons, their claws extended to strike from afar with unnatural reach, while others remain trapped behind their closed fists. In graveyards and glowing mushroom groves, unique variants emerge, adapted to their specific biomes or the rare celestial events that birth them. They are the relentless reminder that nightfall brings not just darkness, but a tide of undead that waits for any mistake, any unsealed gap, to drag the living down into the cold earth.
In Their Own Story
The first drop of rain chilled your skin as twilight surrendered to night. You rushed toward the small wooden house you had built in haste, heart hammering against your ribs. Behind you, the groans began—a low, guttural sound that seemed to rise from the soil itself. You reached for the door handle, but a sudden crash against the wood made you freeze.
A Zombie stood there, its tattered clothes clinging to a frame of decaying gray flesh. It did not stop; it slammed into the barrier again and again, eyes fixed on your silhouette through the gap. Then came the sound of scraping nails. Another zombie, larger than the first, raised a disembodied arm that snapped forward with a sickening crack, extending its reach beyond the doorframe. You held your breath as they tested the latch, their fingers clawing at the wood until the moonlight caught a red hue in the sky. The Blood Moon had begun, and now the doors would no longer hold them back.
Reader's Guide
Zombies spawn on the surface exclusively during the night in pre-Hardmode worlds, appearing frequently near player starting locations. They utilize Fighter AI, walking toward players, jumping over obstacles, and navigating platforms with surprising agility.
Their primary threat is direct contact damage, but their ability to open doors during Blood Moons makes them a critical shelter hazard. While standard zombies are locked out of homes outside of these events, Armed Zombies in Expert Mode wield detached arms for an extended-range claw attack that deals increased damage.
To survive early nights, new players should remain indoors or build simple wooden boxes with small openings to strike safely from behind cover. Weapons like Spears, Vilethorns, or piercing ranged items such as Shurikens are effective against groups. For farming, lava traps or arena designs that prevent door interaction work best.
Notable drops include Shackles (2%), the rare Zombie Arm (0.4%), and the extremely elusive Spiffo Plush (0.07%). Variants like Raincoat Zombies appear in rain, while others populate specific biomes like Glowing Mushrooms or Graveyards.
