Piranha
Silent teeth in the jungle depths wait for the unwary swimmer
The Piranha is a pre-Hardmode enemy that can be found in water pools in the Jungle and Underground Jungle biomes, as well as in the Cavern layer. It is twice as common in the Jungle biomes. Piranhas swim in a straight line left or right until hitting a wall, where they flip directions. They will swim towards the player if they are submerged in water; otherwise, they pay no attention to them. They move their tail back and forth and swim in a slight zig-zag. If a Piranha is outside of water, it will flop around wildly, making it dangerous to approach. - Item (Quantity) Rate - Compass (Desktop, Console, Old-gen console and Mobile versions) 1.33% (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) - Robot Hat 0.4% - Hook 3.3% - Internal NPC ID : 58 - 1 Notes - 2 Trivia - 3 History - 4 References

Lore & Background
["Beneath the emerald canopy of the Jungle and deep within its subterranean veins, a different kind of predator hunts. The Piranha is not merely a fish but a living testament to the peril of water in these ancient lands. These sharp-toothed swimmers drift with deceptive calmness, their tails flicking in lazy zig-zags until the scent of blood or the presence of an intruder rouses them from their trance. To the local fauna and careless travelers alike, they are a reminder that the jungle's waters offer no sanctuary.", 'In the pre-Hardmode era, these creatures rule the shallow pools and cavernous reservoirs with an iron jaw. They move as a unified front only when provoked, ignoring all but those who dare to wade into their domain. Once the world shifts into Hardmode, the ecosystem evolves; two-thirds of their numbers vanish, replaced by the more formidable Angler Fish, yet the Piranha remains a persistent threat in the dark waters. Their presence is marked by the frantic flopping of bodies stranded on dry land, a desperate thrashing that turns even a harmless fish into a deadly hazard for anyone foolish enough to approach.', "Legends among the miners speak of the Compass they sometimes carry, a relic guiding the lost through the labyrinthine depths. While most fall before their bite, yielding only coins and the occasional Hook or Robot Hat, survivors whisper of the sheer danger of a school in full frenzy. They are the silent guardians of the water's edge, waiting for the moment an adventurer slips beneath the surface."]
In Their Own Story
['You descend into the cool, green gloom of the Underground Jungle, your torchlight flickering against damp stone walls. The air is thick with humidity and the distant chirp of crickets, but here, in this submerged cavern, silence reigns until it breaks. A school of Piranhas materializes from the murk, their scales catching the faint glow of your lantern. They swim in a straight line, indifferent to your presence, their tails weaving a hypnotic rhythm through the water.', 'Curiosity draws you closer, and suddenly, they turn. The moment your body breaks the surface tension or enters their aquatic sphere, their demeanor shifts from passive drifters to frenzied hunters. You feel the sting before you see it, a sharp bite tearing at your armor as they swarm. Panic sets in as you scramble for the dry ledge, but one straggler leaps onto the stone, flopping wildly with desperate, violent jerks. Its mouth snaps shut on empty air, teeth grinding against rock, proving that even out of water, danger clings to them like a second skin.', "You retreat into the shadows, heart pounding, watching as they resume their straight-line patrol once you are clear of the water's edge. The encounter leaves a lingering chill, a reminder that in these depths, the water is not your friend, but a hunting ground for teeth that never sleep."]
Reader's Guide
['The Piranha inhabits all water pools within the Jungle and Underground Jungle biomes, as well as the Cavern layer, appearing twice as frequently in surface Jungle waters. It is strictly a pre-Hardmode threat, though it persists in reduced numbers until Hardmode replaces roughly two-thirds of its population with Angler Fish.', 'These enemies utilize a Swimming AI, moving in straight lines until hitting a wall where they reverse direction. They only target players submerged in water; on land, they simply flop frantically but remain dangerous to approach due to their high damage output. Their defense is low, yet their bite deals significant damage, scaling from 25 to 135 depending on world progression.', 'To farm them safely, attack from outside the water or use ranged weapons while standing on dry land. If they are spawned via a Piranha Statue, ensure you remain dry to avoid aggro. Notable drops include the Compass (1.33% chance), Hook (3.3%), and the rare Robot Hat (0.4%). Always carry a Piranha Banner to boost damage against them during farming sessions.']
