Lore & Background

In the suffocating darkness of the Cavern layer, where the earth presses close and torchlight flickers against ancient stone, the Skeleton stands as a timeless guardian. These undead wanderers possess no flesh to rot nor blood to spill, only a relentless will driven by the silence below. Though they appear mindless, their Fighter AI allows them to navigate the world with surprising cunning, capable of opening doors and Tall Gates when the moon bleeds red or when graveyards gather in sorrowful numbers.

Among the deep dark, some skeletons have evolved beyond simple melee, learning to hurl jagged bones at intruders from a distance. These bone-throwing variants serve as a grim warning that death here is not merely a matter of proximity. With over fifty variations of skeletal foes populating the world, from the armored vikings to the cursed skulls, this common skeleton remains the foundational horror of the underground. They are the first test for any adventurer descending into the abyss, proving that even without muscles or skin, a skeleton can be just as deadly as its fleshy counterparts.

In Their Own Story

You descend deeper than the light dares to follow, your pickaxe echoing against the cold stone walls of the Cavern. The air grows heavy with dust and silence until a faint rattling sound breaks the stillness. From the shadows emerges a skeleton, its bones bleached white by eons underground, eyes burning with an eternal, hollow fire. It does not hesitate. With a clatter of dry joints, it lunges forward, raising a rusted blade or perhaps preparing to cast a bone into the dark.

You dodge its initial strike, the weapon slicing through empty air where you stood moments before. The skeleton pivots with unnatural speed, its Fighter AI calculating your next move before you even make it. In this narrow corridor, there is no room for error. As the battle intensifies, you notice another skeleton in the distance, one that suddenly hurls a bone projectile toward you, forcing you to roll aside just as it shatters against the wall behind you. The clash of steel against bone fills the cavern, a rhythmic dance of survival where every step could be your last.

Reader's Guide

Spawn Location: Regular Skeletons primarily populate the Cavern layer in pre-Hardmode. They can also be summoned artificially using the Skeleton Statue.

Behavior & Threat: These enemies utilize Fighter AI and will aggressively pursue players. While most rely on melee attacks, they possess a unique ability to open doors and Tall Gates during Blood Moons or within Graveyards. Notably, damage from their door-opening attempts cannot be dodged by standard evasion effects. In Expert Mode, certain variants can throw bones at close range; these specific bone-throwers can also be spawned via the Bone Skeleton Statue.

Combat Strategy: Maintain distance to avoid melee hits and dodge thrown bones if facing Expert variants. Be cautious of Tall Gates during Blood Moons, as skeletons may breach your base defenses. Building walls or using platforms can force them into predictable paths.

Notable Drops: Defeating these foes yields a variety of rare items including the Bone Sword (0.5%), Ancient Iron Helmet (1%), and Ancient Gold Helmet (0.5%). They also drop common loot like Hooks (4%) and the humorous Carton of Milk (0.67%).
