Antlion
Ancient guardians of the dunes spit burning sand at intruders
The Antlion is a pre-Hardmode enemy found in Deserts during the day and in Underground Deserts at any time. It remains stationary with its head sticking out of the ground, turns its head towards the player when they are within its line of sight, and fires Sand Ball projectiles at them once every 3.33 seconds. It can only launch projectiles at an upward angle (within about 45° to the left and right), so players that are approaching from lower ground are usually out of its line of fire. Sand Balls turn into Sand Blocks upon hitting an object, and will gather on the ground, similarly to the projectiles fired by the Sandgun . - Item (Quantity) Rate - Banana Split 2% - Antlion Mandible (1–2) 33.3% - Sand Ball - Internal NPC ID : 69 - Internal Projectile ID : 31 - 1 Notes - 2 Trivia - 3 History - 4 References

Lore & Background
Deep within the sun-scorched expanse of the Underground Desert, an ancient nest stirs beneath the shifting grains. These creatures, born from primordial larvae that once trapped insects in self-dug pits, have evolved into static sentinels guarding their brood with relentless fury. They do not wander; they wait. Their bodies remain buried deep within the earth, leaving only a grotesque, chitinous head exposed to the air as a warning to all who tread above. To the uninitiated, the desert floor seems merely empty, but beneath the surface lies a labyrinth of tunnels and eggs protected by these silent, sand-spitting sentries.
The Antlion's defense is as brutal as it is primitive. When a trespasser enters their line of sight, they unleash globs of superheated sand that harden instantly upon impact, creating new terrain from thin air. This projectile vomit serves not only to drive away threats but to reshape the battlefield, turning open corridors into treacherous piles of falling grit. The Bestiary whispers that this act is a desperate defense of their nesting grounds, a biological imperative to protect the next generation from those who would dare disturb the silence of the deep desert.
Legend suggests the entire Underground Desert may be nothing more than one colossal Antlion nest, a funnel-like entry point leading to a subterranean hive. The creatures that emerge here are but the grown forms of their larval ancestors, now capable of defending their territory with a stationary yet deadly precision. They are the true masters of this arid realm, turning the very ground beneath the player's feet into both a weapon and a tomb.
In Their Own Story
You step onto the sun-baked dunes, the heat shimmering in waves that distort the horizon. The silence is absolute until you feel it—a subtle vibration traveling up through your boots from the sand below. Suddenly, a jagged chitinous head erupts from the ground mere feet away, its mandibles clicking with a sound like snapping twigs. It does not charge; it simply turns, its single unblinking eye locking onto your soul.
With a sickening heave, it launches a glob of sand that arcs through the air before exploding against a nearby rock, instantly hardening into a rough block. You realize too late that you are standing in its kill zone. Another shot follows, then another, each impact adding to a growing pile of debris at your feet. The Antlion is immovable, a statue of war buried in the earth, yet it rains death with terrifying regularity. You scramble backward, climbing an incline where its gaze cannot follow, watching as the creature struggles futilely against the slope, unable to bury itself or reach you. In that moment, you understand the desert does not forgive intrusion; it merely waits for you to slip into its trap.
Reader's Guide
The Antlion is a pre-Hardmode threat lurking in surface Deserts during daylight hours and throughout the Underground Desert at any time of day. It remains stationary with only its head exposed, firing Sand Ball projectiles every 3.33 seconds within a 45-degree upward arc. This limited trajectory means approaching from lower ground or behind cover renders you safe from its ranged assault.
Combat strategy relies on exploiting its immobility and the physics of its attacks. Since the Antlion can only fire upward, players positioned below it are invulnerable to direct hits. Furthermore, the Sand Balls transform into solid Sand Blocks upon impact, creating renewable terrain but also potential hazards if they fall on you or block your movement. If an incline faces directly upward, the Antlion will attempt to climb slowly rather than burying itself, making it vulnerable to melee attacks from above.
For farming, focus on collecting Antlion Mandibles, which drop at a 33.3% rate and are essential for crafting the Desert Key or other desert-themed items. The rare Banana Split dessert has a slim 2% chance of dropping, offering a sweet reward for persistence. While their health is modest in pre-Hardmode, they become significantly tougher in Hardmode and Post-Plantera. Remember that only the head takes damage; attacks aimed at its buried body will pass through harmlessly.
Did You Know?
- The Antlion is one of the few entities besides the player capable of placing blocks in the world by turning Sand Balls into Sand Blocks.
- Only the Antlion's exposed head can take damage or deal contact damage; its buried body is intangible and indestructible.
- In real life, antlion larvae dig pits to trap prey, a behavior mirrored by the Underground Desert's funnel-like entry structure.
- Falling sand created by the Antlion's projectiles can damage other enemies even though the Sand Ball projectiles themselves cannot.
