Jellyfish
Silent drifters of the deep that turn shallow waters into electric graveyards
Jellyfish are enemies found in water . When underwater, they attack by propelling themselves towards the player in short bursts. When outside of water, they will be unable to move or pursue the player in any way. Jellyfish are able to jump out of the water to attack players, often leaving them stranded on land. Most varieties of Jellyfish produce light, making them easy to spot in dark areas. There are 5 Jellyfish variants, 3 of which only appear during Hardmode . In Expert Mode (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) , a Jellyfish will periodically become "electrified" (except for Fungo Fish). During this electrified state, it is invincible, and will constantly maintain its speed unless it comes into contact with a solid block or the water's surface. Certain attacks to Jellyfish in this state will hurt the player by 1.3× the contact damage of the Jellyfish ( see Notes for details ). Unlike other damage sources, this damage will not be reduced by banners . - 1 Variants 1.1 Pre-Hardmode - 1.2 Hardmode - 2 Notes - 3 Trivia 3.1 Bestiary entries - 4 History - 5 References

Lore & Background
In the sunless depths where light barely penetrates, the Jellyfish glows with a spectral bioluminescence, marking them as both navigational beacons and harbingers of doom. These brainless creatures drift through the cavernous aquifers of Terraria, their gelatinous forms pulsing with an eerie inner fire that betrays their presence in the darkest tunnels. While some species remain bound to the pre-Hardmode waters, others have mutated or evolved alongside the world's corruption and hallow, appearing only after the mechanical gates of Hardmode are thrown open.
Legend speaks of a strange tingling sensation preceding an attack, the unwelcome surging of electrical death that courses through their bodies. In Expert Mode, this danger escalates as they become electrified, rendering them invincible to all but the most careful strikes. To strike one in this state is to invite pain, for their contact damage multiplies against the foolhardy adventurer. Even on land, where they lie stranded and motionless like broken toys, a single misstep can leave a player vulnerable or silenced by their lingering toxic touch.
The Crimson has twisted some into blood-red horrors, while others have absorbed glowing mushroom spores to become curious hybrids of fungus and fauna. Whether serving as random wanderers in the Underworld's artificial pools or leaping from water onto dry land to trap the unwary, they remain a constant reminder that even the quietest depths hold lethal secrets.
In Their Own Story
The water was still, save for the gentle ripple of your boots disturbing the surface. Then you saw it: a soft blue pulse in the gloom, drifting closer with silent intent. You raised your sword, but the creature did not retreat. Instead, it surged forward in short, jerky bursts, its body glowing brighter as it closed the distance.
You struck, but something felt wrong. The jellyfish seemed to vibrate, a static charge crackling through the water. It slammed into you, and instead of a simple impact, a searing shockwave tore through your armor. You stumbled back onto the muddy bank, gasping as your mana reserves evaporated instantly, silenced by the creature's toxic touch. Panic set in as more lights appeared below, leaping from the waves to land on the shore around you.
They were stranded now, motionless and harmless on the dry earth, yet the silence they imposed was deafening. You watched them pulse with that unnatural light, realizing too late that their greatest weapon was not their sting, but the way they turned your own magic against you. As the wind picked up, a kite flew overhead, mocking your predicament while these silent hunters waited for the tide to return.
Reader's Guide
Jellyfish inhabit water bodies within Underground Caverns and can surprisingly spawn in the Underworld if sufficient water exists. Pre-Hardmode varieties include Blue and Pink Jellyfish, while Hardmode introduces Green, Blood, and Fungo Fish variants.
Their movement is unique: they propel themselves toward players underwater but become completely immobile on dry land unless knocked back into water. In Expert Mode, they periodically enter an electrified state where they are invincible, maintain constant speed until hitting a block or surface, and deal 1.3x contact damage to melee attackers and certain projectiles. Note that this specific damage is not reduced by banners.
Combat strategy involves avoiding their electrified states entirely; wait for them to lose the charge or attack from range with non-projectile weapons if safe. If they leap onto land, they are harmless until water returns. For farming, use Water Candles and Battle Potions in a controlled aquatic arena. Notable drops include the Jellyfish Necklace (1% chance) and Glowsticks (100%). Windy Days offer a 2% chance for rare Kites. Hardmode variants may drop the Megaphone or Monster Meat.

- Jellyfish statues can be wired to spawn Blue Jellyfish in any location with water.
- Blue and Green Jellyfish can naturally spawn in the Underworld if a large body of water is present.
- Knocking an Expert Mode Jellyfish onto dry land prevents it from ever becoming electrified again.
- The Fungo Fish is the only jellyfish variant that does not become electrified in Expert Mode.
