Man Eater

A hungry vine anchored in shadow, waiting to snap at passing flesh

The Man Eater is a pre-Hardmode enemy found in the Underground Jungle , and is nearly identical in appearance and behavior to the above-ground Snatcher . Man Eaters spawn anchored to blocks, with an extendable stem topped by a pincher. The stem itself is a passive component and can be walked through safely without incurring damage; only the pincher inflicts or takes damage. - Item (Quantity) Rate - Coffee 3.33% - Only one of the following three items can drop - Ancient Cobalt Helmet 0.33% - Ancient Cobalt Breastplate 0.33% - Ancient Cobalt Leggings 0.33% - Vine 50% 100% - Man Eater Kite (on Windy Days ) 4% - Internal NPC ID : 43 - 1 Notes - 2 Tips - 3 Trivia - 4 History - 5 References

Lore & Background

Legends whispered by brave explorers speak of the Man Eater's insatiable appetite for human flesh, a hunger so profound that it drives the plant toward a grotesque metamorphosis. According to the ancient Bestiary records, those who feast enough on intruders may undergo a cocoon-like transformation, birthing the more ferocious Angry Trapper. While the stem itself remains harmless, a passive extension of the plant's root system, the great maw at its end is a death sentence for the unwary. It is a creature of duality, offering valuable remnants like Vines and fragments of ancient Cobalt armor to those foolish enough to challenge it, yet demanding blood as tribute.

In Their Own Story

You descend deeper into the jungle's underbelly, your torch flickering against walls slick with moisture. The air grows heavy, smelling of damp earth and something metallic. Suddenly, a shadow detaches itself from the cavern wall—a brown vine, thick as your arm, ending in a jaw lined with teeth that gleam red in the firelight. It is motionless, a statue of death, until you take one step closer. With a sickening crack of stretching plant matter, the stem erupts outward, extending far beyond what should be possible. The pincher snaps shut inches from your face, missing by a heartbeat. You scramble back, heart hammering against your ribs, realizing too late that the vine can stretch nearly twenty tiles in its rage. As you retreat, the creature retracts with a wet slurp, its red-tinged jaw snapping emptily at the air, already waiting for the next soul to wander into its silent trap.

Reader's Guide

The Man Eater is a pre-Hardmode enemy exclusive to the Underground Jungle biome. It appears anchored to blocks, utilizing Plant AI to ambush players. Its threat lies in its two-phase behavior: a normal state allowing extension up to roughly 15.6 tiles for five seconds, and an extended state reaching over 20 tiles for 2.5 seconds. In For the Worthy or Zenith worlds, these ranges increase by 40%. Only the pincher head deals damage (34/68 pre-Hardmode) and takes damage; the stem is safe to walk through.

To fight them effectively, maintain distance or use ranged weapons that can strike the head without hitting the stem. Lighting them on fire with weapons like the Sunfury illuminates hidden caves due to their erratic movement. Farming requires patience in the Underground Jungle, as they drop Vines (50-100% chance) and have a small 3.33% chance to drop Coffee. Rarely, they yield Ancient Cobalt armor pieces, with each piece having only a 0.33% drop rate. On Windy Days, there is also a 4% chance for the Man Eater Kite.
