Lore & Background
Beneath the silver glare of a full moon, the boundary between man and beast dissolves into madness. These were once peaceful villagers, farmers, and lovers, now twisted by an ancient lunar curse that strips away their humanity with every rising tide of light. The Werewolf roams the surface world only when the moon hangs heavy and whole, driven by an instinctual hunger that compels them to devour those they once cherished. Their transformation is not merely physical but spiritual, a descent into feral rage where memory fades and only the taste of flesh remains.
In the dark corners of Hardmode worlds, these creatures emerge with terrifying speed, their claws ripping through the night air as they hunt for warmth and life. They are masters of the leap, closing distances in an instant to catch travelers off guard, leaving behind a bleeding wound that saps vitality long after the beast has fled. Though they can open doors to seek out their prey, their true power lies in the chaotic frenzy they bring to any settlement foolish enough to linger outdoors during the full moon.
The only remnant of their former selves is the Moon Charm, a curious trinket that allows the brave or desperate to embrace this curse willingly. Yet even with such control, the beast within never truly sleeps, for the Werewolf remembers nothing but the hunt when faced with another of its kind.
In Their Own Story
You stand at the edge of your homestead, the air thick with the scent of damp earth and impending violence. Above, the full moon casts a cold, sterile glow over the forest, turning familiar trees into jagged silhouettes. A low growl rumbles through the ground before you even see him—a massive shape bursting from the treeline, eyes burning with a feral red light.
He moves faster than any man should, a blur of fur and muscle that clears the fence in a single, terrifying leap. You raise your weapon just as he lands, his claws raking across your armor, leaving a deep gash that throbs with a strange, draining heat. The Bleeding takes hold instantly, your strength sapping away as he circles you, snarling like a broken thing.
You fire a silver bullet, the shot striking true and causing him to howl in pain, but he does not fall. Instead, he lunges again, his jaws snapping inches from your face. In that split second, you realize the horror of his existence: this was once someone's father, someone's brother, now lost forever to the moon's cruel whim.
Reader's Guide
The Werewolf is a Hardmode enemy exclusive to surface biomes during nights when a full moon is active. This includes Blood Moons only if they coincide with the lunar phase. They possess high mobility, leaping and lunging at players from close range, and can open doors to pursue their prey directly.
Their attack pattern involves rapid closing of distance followed by melee strikes that inflict the Bleeding debuff 12.5% of the time. This debuff prevents life regeneration for up to 90 seconds in Master Mode, making sustained combat dangerous without healing items or specific defenses.
To farm Werewolves effectively, use a Water Candle and Battle Potions to increase spawn rates during full moon nights. If underpowered, construct a simple arena with a safe platform and a small opening to fire projectiles while avoiding their leaps. Silver Bullets deal triple damage to them on Desktop, Console, and Mobile versions, making them the optimal ammunition choice.
Notable drops include the Moon Charm (1.67% chance), which grants Werewolf transformation abilities at night, and the Adhesive Bandage (1-2% chance). The Wolf Fang is a version-specific drop for older consoles.
