Toxic Sludge
A grinning nightmare of green poison blooming in the deep earth
The Toxic Sludge is a Hardmode enemy and a slime variant that spawns in the Underground layer in place of ordinary slimes. It deals significantly increased damage and has a 1/2 (50%) chance of inflicting the Poisoned debuff for 10 / 20 / 25 seconds, which it is also immune to. Like most other slimes, the Toxic Sludge will be passive towards any player with the Royal Gel (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) accessory equipped. - Item (Quantity) Rate - Gel (1–2) 100% - Slime Staff 0.01% 0.014% - Bezoar 1% 1.99% - Internal NPC ID : 141 - Internal Buff ID : 20

Lore & Background
Beneath the crust where sunlight dares not tread, a twisted evolution of the common slime stirs. The Toxic Sludge is no mindless blob of gelatinous drift; it is a cunning predator forged in the crucible of Hardmode. Distantly related to its harmless kin, this creature has learned to weaponize its own essence, coating itself in potent toxins that seep into the very air of the caverns. Its most unsettling feature, however, is not its strength but its visage—a disarming, toothy smile that belies the lethal venom within, a grotesque mask worn by one of Terraria's few hostile slimes with a visible face.
Legends among the miners speak of the Sludge as a guardian of the deep, appearing only when the world shifts into its harder state. It waits in the shadows of the Underground layer, replacing ordinary slimes with a more dangerous variant that laughs at the player's approach. The creature is immune to the very poison it wields, a testament to its bizarre adaptation. While most slimes are passive or merely bouncy nuisances, this entity strikes with calculated malice, inflicting a wasting sickness upon any who draw too close. It is a reminder that even the simplest forms of life can evolve into horrors when the world beneath them changes.
In Their Own Story
You descend deeper than the stone feels safe, your pickaxe echoing against walls slick with moisture. The air grows heavy, thick with an unnatural humidity that clings to your skin. Suddenly, a soft thud breaks the silence ahead. You freeze. There, illuminated by your torchlight, sits a mass of emerald slime. It does not bounce aimlessly like its cousins found in the surface world. Instead, it pulses rhythmically, and then you see it—a wide, toothy grin carved into its gelatinous form, stretching unnaturally across its face.
It wobbles forward, ignoring your presence until you step within range. With a sudden, violent leap, it launches itself at you. You dodge, but the creature's bounce carries it right back, landing with a sickening squelch just inches from your boots. A green mist erupts around it as it lands again, and you feel an immediate, creeping weakness in your limbs. The Poisoned debuff takes hold, draining your vitality slowly but surely. You strike back, but the slime seems to laugh at your blows with that same unblinking smile. It is not just a monster; it is a trap waiting for the unwary, a grinning death in the dark.
Reader's Guide
The Toxic Sludge appears exclusively in the Underground layer once Hardmode has been activated, replacing standard slimes in this depth. It presents a significant threat due to its high damage output (50/100/150 depending on difficulty) and its ability to inflict the Poisoned debuff for up to 25 seconds with a 50% chance. This debuff causes continuous life loss, making it dangerous even if you survive the initial impact.
To counter this foe, equip armor or accessories that provide poison immunity, such as the Bezoar, which also has a chance to drop from the creature itself (1% in normal mode, 2% in expert/master). The Royal Gel accessory can render them completely passive on Desktop, Console, and Mobile versions if you wish to avoid conflict. For farming purposes, their high health pool means they require sustained DPS; using weapons with piercing capabilities or area-of-effect attacks is advisable.
Notable drops include the rare Slime Staff (0.01% chance), making this a viable but statistically difficult farm for early-game summoners. They also always drop 1-2 Gel and have a chance to yield the Bezoar, an essential component for crafting the Ankh Shield. Always carry healing potions when exploring the Underground during Hardmode.
