Squirrels

Tiny guardians of the forest who flee or fight based on your fortune

The Squirrel and Red Squirrel (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) are harmless critters that spawn in the Forest biome . They also have a small chance of spawning upon shaking a Forest or Pearlwood tree . Squirrels may turn hostile to players with negative luck ; see hostile critter for details . Squirrels have only 5 health and no defense , and can be damaged by other enemies and players. Squirrels can be caught with any Bug Net to be carried around in the inventory and released later, or crafted into animated decorative furniture ( Squirrel / Red Squirrel Cage ). Once crafted, the Squirrels cannot be released again, unless the furniture item is de-crafted via Shimmer (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) . Squirrels can be spawned by the Squirrel Statue , however statue-spawned critters cannot be caught with any Bug Net, and will disappear in a puff of smoke when the player attempts to do so. On the Desktop version , Console version , and Mobile version , there is a 1/400 (0.25%) chance for a Gold Squirrel to spawn in place of an ordinary one. - Internal Item ID : 2018 (normal), 3563 (red) - Internal Tile ID : 724 - Internal NPC ID : 299 (normal), 538 (red) - 1 Crafting 1.1 Used in - 2 Trivia 2.1 Bestiary entries - 3 See also - 4 History

Lore & Background

In the verdant heart of Terraria's forests, the Squirrel and its rarer crimson kin scurry through the underbrush, embodying the wild spirit of the woods. These grayish-brown and red-furred rodents are typically harmless observers, darting between tree trunks with erratic energy that belies their fragility. They are creatures of pure instinct, living lives defined by the rustle of leaves and the safety of the canopy, rarely acknowledging the heavy boots of adventurers unless fate intervenes.

Yet, the forest holds a strange magic tied to the traveler's spirit. When a wanderer's luck turns sour, these usually docile critters may twist into hostile shadows, their eyes gleaming with sudden aggression despite retaining only five hearts of life. It is a subtle reminder that in this world, even the smallest creature reacts to the cosmic balance of fortune. While they can be gently captured and caged as living furniture, once crafted into stone and wood, their wild essence is forever bound, only reclaimable through the transformative waters of Shimmer.

A golden variant occasionally sparkles among them, a rare treasure worth 1/400th of all sightings, hinting at the hidden wealth buried within the mundane. Whether as fleeting companions or statuesque decorations, they remain a testament to the delicate ecosystem where life is both precious and perilously fragile.

In Their Own Story

You step softly into the morning mist, the air thick with the scent of damp earth and pine. A flash of gray catches your eye—a Squirrel perched high on an oak branch, its bushy tail twitching in rhythm with the wind. It pauses, tilting its head as if recognizing a kindred spirit, before darting down to nibble at a fallen acorn. The moment feels suspended in time, a quiet pact between human and nature.

But then, the sky darkens slightly, not from clouds but from a shift in your own aura. A strange heaviness settles over you; your luck has turned. Suddenly, the Squirrel's posture changes. Its tiny ears prick forward, and its eyes narrow into slits of hostility. It does not flee this time. Instead, it screeches, charging with a bravery that defies its five hearts of life. You watch in awe as it leaps, a tiny projectile of rage against your armor. With a single, careless step, you accidentally crush the brave little foe, leaving only a puff of smoke and a lingering sense of regret. The forest seems to sigh, acknowledging the cruel whimsy of fate that turned a friend into an enemy in the blink of an eye.

Reader's Guide

Squirrels spawn naturally in the Forest biome on Desktop, Console, and Mobile versions. They often appear when shaking Forest or Pearlwood trees. A rare Gold Squirrel variant has a 1/400 chance to replace a normal one.

These creatures possess Passive AI normally but may become hostile if your luck stat is negative. They deal no damage, have only 5 health and zero defense, and are easily killed by other enemies or players.

To farm them, shake trees in a Forest biome until they drop. You can catch any non-statue Squirrel using any Bug Net to carry in your inventory. Once caught, they can be released or crafted into animated furniture cages. Note that statue-spawned squirrels vanish if you attempt to net them.

Useful drops include the Squirrel and Red Squirrel items for crafting decorative cages or the Terrarium. They sell for 5 Silver Coins on modern platforms but have no value on older consoles.
