Lore & Background

Deep within the festering veins of the Underground Corruption, a strange mutation has taken flight. The Slimer was once merely another gelatinous spawn of the shadowy biome until it donned wings of unknown origin, granting it dominion over the air above its rotting domain. These appendages, resembling the tattered Demon Wings of fallen foes, allow the creature to dart and dive with a predatory grace unseen in other slimes. It hunts not by bouncing, but by mimicking the erratic, swooping patterns of bats, plunging from the darkness to strike before retreating into the gloom.

Yet this aerial supremacy is fragile. The wings are easily knocked off by sufficient force, revealing a tragic duality within the beast's existence. Once divested of its flight, the Slimer crashes to the earth, transforming instantly into a ground-bound sludge that bounces with diminished vigor and reduced vitality. To the observant traveler, this reveals a creature in constant flux between two states of being: a terrifying aerial predator or a vulnerable, hopping nuisance. The Bestiary notes that while it mimics the Corrupt Slime in its fallen state, it possesses far less resilience, suggesting the wings were the true source of its power.

Only those clad in the Royal Gel may pass unmolested, for this accessory commands absolute loyalty from all slime-kind, rendering the Slimer's dual nature harmless. Without such protection, adventurers must be prepared to face a creature that can shift its very form mid-battle, forcing them to adapt their tactics against both bat-like dives and standard bouncing attacks.

In Their Own Story

The air in the Underground Corruption grows thick with spores as you descend deeper, your torchlight flickering against the purple walls. Suddenly, a shadow detaches itself from the ceiling. It is not a bat, nor a bird, but a Slimer, its body glistening with a sickly green hue while tattered wings beat a frantic rhythm above it. You raise your weapon too late; it swoops down with the Bat AI, claws extended, inflicting a sudden Darkness that plunges your world into shadow.

You strike back, your blade connecting with a wet thud. The creature shrieks, and in an instant, its wings are severed, fluttering to the floor like dead leaves. It crashes to the ground, no longer airborne but now bouncing with pathetic determination. Its health bar has plummeted; it is vulnerable now, stripped of its aerial advantage. You press your advantage, watching as it hops away from you with a knockback resistance lower than most creatures in this realm. As it finally collapses into a pile of gel and meat, the silence returns, broken only by the faint rustle of the wings lying useless on the corrupted earth.

Reader's Guide

The Slimer is a Hardmode enemy exclusive to The Corruption and Underground Corruption biomes. It appears as a winged slime utilizing Bat AI, swooping and diving at players with significant aggression. Its initial form boasts high health and damage, capable of inflicting the Darkness debuff for up to 37.5 seconds depending on difficulty settings.

When struck hard enough to remove its wings, the Slimer undergoes a dramatic transformation. It drops to the ground, adopting standard Slime AI with significantly reduced stats and one of the lowest knockback resistances in the game. This two-stage fight requires adaptability; piercing weapons can exploit this transition by damaging the fallen form immediately after the wings are severed before invincibility frames apply.

Farmers should note that while the Slimer drops 100% Gel, it has a rare chance to drop the Meat Grinder (0.5%) and an even rarer chance for Monster Meat (0.07%). The Blindfold also drops at a low rate. To avoid its attacks entirely, equip the Royal Gel accessory on Desktop, Console, and Mobile versions, which renders all slime variants passive.
