Shark
Relentless ocean predators that strike with ravenous speed and unyielding force
The Shark is a pre-Hardmode enemy that spawns in the Ocean . Sharks are rarer than other Ocean enemies like Crabs or Pink Jellyfish , though they are still relatively common. Throwing a Chum Bucket into Ocean water will multiply the spawn chance of Sharks by 5×. Unlike Chum Buckets' effect on Fishing Power , only one use is required to boost the spawn chance of Sharks to the maximum possible value. - Item (Quantity) Rate - Shrimp Po' Boy 2% - Shark Kite (on Windy Days ) 4% - One of the following two items will always be dropped - Diving Helmet 5% - Shark Fin 95% - Internal NPC ID : 65 - 1 Notes - 2 Tips - 3 Trivia - 4 See also - 5 History - 6 References

Lore & Background
In the sun-drenched shallows of the Ocean biome, where the water turns a brilliant turquoise, lurks a predator of singular appetite. The Shark is no mere beast of the deep but a relentless engine of destruction, drawn by the scent of blood or the chaotic vibrations of a Chum Bucket thrown into the surf. Unlike other aquatic denizens that flee from the shore, these creatures possess an uncanny ability to traverse the boundary between sea and sand without flopping in desperation, maintaining their terrifying momentum even when beached upon the wet grains.
Local legends whisper that once a Shark locks onto a target, it becomes unstoppable, driven by a primal hunger that ignores all but the most potent defenses. They move with a fluid grace that belies their ferocity, charging through the water faster than any swimmer can retreat. While they are common sights in the pre-Hardmode era, their rarity compared to crabs or jellyfish makes each encounter feel like a confrontation with a specific omen of danger rather than a random nuisance.
To the unprepared traveler, the Shark represents the ocean's unforgiving nature, a creature that demands respect and preparation. Whether summoned by the dark magic of a statue or drawn naturally from the depths, they are the guardians of the coast, testing the resolve of any who dare to walk the shoreline with their 40 points of raw damage and an unyielding charge that can shatter weak armor in moments.
In Their Own Story
You stand at the edge of the world where the sky bleeds into a horizon of endless blue. The water is calm, deceptively so, until you toss a Chum Bucket into the surf. Instantly, the silence breaks. A shadow detaches itself from the deep, moving with a speed that defies logic. It is a Shark, its grey skin shimmering like polished steel under the sun.
It charges before you can react, a torpedo of teeth and malice. You dive just as it slams into the water where you stood, sending a spray of foam skyward. The beast does not falter; it turns with hydraulic precision, ignoring your retreat. You feel the pull of the water, the danger of sinking to the bottom where its reach is absolute. Raising your weapon, you wait for the moment it breaches again.
As it leaps, jaws agape, you strike. The impact halts its momentum only briefly before it surges forward once more, a relentless force that refuses to be knocked back. You hold your ground on the sandy floor of the ocean, digging in as the water churns around you, knowing that this creature will not stop until one of you yields.
Reader's Guide
Sharks inhabit the Ocean biome during pre-Hardmode, spawning within 250 tiles of the map edge or via Shark Statues. They are rarer than Crabs but common enough to pose a significant threat to early-game adventurers.
These aquatic predators utilize a Swimming AI, charging directly at players with speeds exceeding most movement capabilities. They deal 40 damage in pre-Hardmode (scaling to 120 in later stages) and possess high knockback resistance, making them difficult to stagger without strong weapons or autoswing mechanics like the Bladed Glove.
To defeat them safely, construct a one-block shield above the water line while standing half-submerged, allowing ranged attacks to arc over cover. Alternatively, dig a pit in the sand on the ocean floor with a gap above your head; Sharks cannot fit through this gap, letting you attack without retaliation. Water Walking Potions or Flipper accessories are essential for surface tactics.
For farming, place Shark Statues over lava pools connected by timers. Note that statue-spawned sharks do not drop items if killed solely by lava, so use minions to ensure a player-inflicted killing blow. Notable drops include the 5% chance for a Diving Helmet and a guaranteed Shark Fin (95% chance) or rare Windy Day exclusive Shark Kite.
Did You Know?
- Throwing a single Chum Bucket multiplies the Shark spawn rate by five times, maxing out the potential immediately.
- Sharks do not flop on land like other fish and remain dangerous even when beached.
- Sharks spawned from statues will not drop items if killed exclusively by lava or traps.
- Real-life shark attacks are rare as sharks typically mistake swimmers for injured seals.
