Lore & Background

In the hushed expanses of the Snow biome, where the wind howls like a lost spirit and ice claims all warmth, the Penguin waddles as a symbol of innocent life. These small creatures, adorned in coats of blue or black, navigate the frigid tundra with a gentle persistence, seeking nothing but the elusive fish that sustain their fragile existence. With merely five hearts beating within their chests and no defense against the harsh world, they rely on the silence of their habitat for survival, often overlooked by the chaotic battles raging nearby.

Yet, the serenity of these avian wanderers is a fragile veneer. When the Blood Moon paints the sky in hues of crimson or when vile powders stain the snow, the Penguin's nature twists into something malevolent. Transformed into Corrupt or Vicious variants, they become harbingers of the same corruption that ravages the land, their gentle waddles replaced by a desperate, corrupted aggression. Even in life, their presence is fleeting; caught by the curious hand and bound within the confines of a Penguin Cage, they lose the ability to return to the wild, becoming mere animated ornaments unless freed by the alchemy of Shimmer.

Despite their vulnerability, the Penguin holds a unique place among the realm's fauna. Unlike other harmless critters, they are honored with a banner that marks their passing, a rare distinction shared only with the Bunny, Bird, and Goldfish. They are both a prize for the collector and a cautionary tale of how easily innocence can be corrupted by the dark forces that lurk beneath the frozen surface.

In Their Own Story

The wind bit at your cheeks as you trudged through the endless drifts of the Snow biome, the silence broken only by the crunch of ice underfoot. There, amidst the stark white expanse, a small movement caught your eye. A Penguin, its feathers a deep, midnight black against the snow, waddled clumsily toward a patch of exposed ground. It paused, tilting its head with an expression of innocent curiosity, completely unaware of the dangers that lurked in the shadows.

You reached into your satchel for a Bug Net, intending to capture this rare sight for your collection. As you swept the net forward, the Penguin did not flee; it simply stood there, trusting and fragile. But then, a low growl echoed from the treeline. A Corrupt Penguin, its eyes glowing with a sickly green hue, emerged from the fog, drawn by the scent of the Blood Moon's influence already beginning to stir in the air. The innocent black-and-white bird froze as the corrupted variant lunged, its small form easily crushed by the stronger enemy.

You watched in horror as the transformation took hold, the peaceful creature twisted into a vessel of malice. In that moment, you realized that even in this frozen paradise, no life was truly safe from the encroaching darkness. The Penguin's brief existence had ended not by your hand, but by the inevitable corruption that sought to consume all warmth and light.

Reader's Guide

The Penguin is a harmless critter found exclusively in the Snow biome during any time of day. It possesses zero damage output and negligible defense, making it easily damaged by other enemies or player attacks. With only five health points, it is one of the most fragile entities in Terraria.

To farm or collect Penguins, equip any Bug Net and approach them gently. Be aware that Penguins spawned via Penguin Statues cannot be caught; they will vanish in a puff of smoke if you attempt to net them. Once captured, they can be released from your inventory at any time. Alternatively, use five Penguins and fifty Stone Blocks at a Sawmill to craft a Penguin Cage. Note that once crafted into furniture, the Penguin cannot be released unless the item is submerged in Shimmer on Desktop, Console, or Mobile versions.

During a Blood Moon, or if struck by Vile/Vicious Powder, normal Penguins transform into Corrupt or Vicious Penguins, becoming hostile enemies with increased danger. While they offer no combat drops, capturing them yields a sell value of 12 Silver and 50 Copper on most platforms (worthless on 3DS). Completing the Bestiary requires researching five specimens.
