Lore & Background

When the desert shifts under the weight of cosmic corruption or divine hallowing, the dead do not rest. Transmogrified by these outside forces, those laid to rest beneath the dunes rise again as Mummies, their bandages stained with the essence of their new masters. In the Corrupted wastes, they are Dark Mummies, draped in shadow and silence; in the Crimson expanse, Blood Mummy forms drip with organic horror, preserved far better than their kin. Even in the purified Hallowed deserts, Light Mummies emerge, their souls twisted into confusion rather than death. These are not mere zombies of the sand but guardians of a buried past, driven by an ancient imperative to maim and kill any who disturb their slumber.

The transformation is absolute. Once human, now they move with a jerking gait that accelerates terrifyingly as they take damage. Their bandages, once symbols of protection for the afterlife, have become shrouds of aggression. They carry the weight of their biome's influence in every step; Dark and Blood variants sprint with unnatural speed when wounded, while Light Mummies disorient travelers before striking. The desert wind no longer whispers of peace but screams of a resurrection gone wrong, turning the quiet dunes into a battleground where the past hunts the present.

These entities serve as the desert's immune system against intrusion, rising wherever sand blocks exist to repel the intruder. Whether in natural biomes or artificial farms carved from pearlescent stone, they stand as a testament to the world's refusal to forget its dead. Their presence signals that the boundary between life and death has thinned, and the sands have claimed new masters who demand tribute in blood and silence.

In Their Own Story

The sun bleeds red over the Crimson dunes, casting long shadows that seem to detach themselves from the rocks. You step onto a patch of Crimsand, the air thick with dust and the smell of old decay. Suddenly, the ground trembles not from an earthquake, but from the shuffling of bandaged feet. A Blood Mummy rises, its form dripping with organic matter that glistens in the harsh light. It does not roar; it simply lunges.

You strike back, your blade cutting through the wrappings, but the creature only moves faster. As its health dips below half, a burst of adrenaline seems to surge through its desiccated frame. It closes the distance with terrifying speed, its hands outstretched. The impact is heavy, sending a wave of nausea through you as silence wraps around your throat, stealing the sound of your own breathing. Darkness swallows the edges of your vision.

Desperate, you retreat toward the safety of a torch-lit platform, but another emerges from the shadows—a Dark Mummy this time, its eyes glowing with malice. It strikes again, and your movements feel sluggish, as if wading through deep water. The confusion sets in as Light Mummies join the fray, their presence twisting your sense of direction. You are trapped in a dance of death, surrounded by the risen dead who refuse to let you leave their domain.

Reader's Guide

Mummies spawn exclusively in Hardmode within Desert biomes or any area containing Sand Blocks (regular, Ebonsand, Crimsand, or Pearlsand). They utilize Fighter AI, mimicking Zombie behavior but with unique speed mechanics. Standard Mummies inflict Slow, while Dark and Blood variants cause Silence and Darkness, and Light Mummies induce Confusion.

Threat Level: Moderate to High. All Mummies gain a 200% speed boost when reduced to 50% health or lower. Dark and Blood Mummies are naturally 150% faster than the standard variant, making them dangerous in groups. Their defense is moderate at 16, but their high damage output (up to 135 in Master Mode) requires constant movement.

Combat Strategy: Keep your distance to avoid the speed surge. Use ranged or magic weapons to whittle health before they close the gap. Equip accessories that counteract debuffs, such as the Ankh Shield for immunity or specific potions like Obsidian Skin or Water Candle to manage spawns.

Farming & Drops: Create artificial biomes using one-block-high trenches of Ebonsand, Crimsand, or Pearlsand to farm Dark, Blood, and Light Mummies efficiently. They drop their respective Shards (Dark, Blood/Light) at 10% chance, essential for crafting. Armor pieces have a 1.33% drop rate each. Accessories like the Fast Clock, Blindfold, Megaphone, and Trifold Map also drop at roughly 1-2% rates.
