Mimics
Beware the false chest that hunger for gold and blood
Mimics are rare Hardmode enemies disguised as Chests , appearing as the appropriate chest type for the environment. Mimics can be spawned by the player using the Chest Statue , even in pre-Hardmode . However, Mimics spawned this way only drop the Mimic Banner . Rarer Corrupt , Crimson , and Hallowed Mimics can also be spawned manually by players via a Key of Light or Key of Night (see the Biome Mimic section below). They are some of the few entities that can be detected by the Lifeform Analyzer or its upgrades. Corrupt, Crimson, and Hallowed Mimics require 25 kills to be awarded completion of their Bestiary entry and corresponding banner , as opposed to the usual 50 kills. - 1 Common variants 1.1 Pre-Hardmode variant - 2 Special variants - 3 Notes 3.1 Spawning - 3.2 Behavior - 4 Tips 4.1 Biome Mimics - 4.2 Identification - 5 Trivia 5.1 Bestiary entries - 6 See also - 7 Gallery - 8 History - 9 References

Lore & Background
In the deep silence of the caverns, where light struggles against the crushing dark, a treacherous illusion waits to ensnare the greedy. These are the Mimics, shapeshifting horrors born of Hardmode corruption or ancient malice, masquerading as the very vessels adventurers seek to plunder. From the humble wooden chest above ground to the locked Shadow Chests of the Underworld, they adopt the guise of safety, their metal cold and unyielding until a foolish hand draws near. They are not merely monsters; they are the embodiment of greed's betrayal, waiting in the shadows to spring upon those who seek wealth without caution.
While common Mimics mimic the local architecture with uncanny precision, rarer kin emerge from the corrupted soil or the blessed light of Hallowed lands. These biome-specific variants do not copy existing chests but instead manifest as larger, grotesque parodies of treasure, their forms hinting at the chaotic biomes they guard. Some are summoned by dark rituals involving Keys of Light and Night, forcing a chest to twist into a living nightmare. Whether spawned by the whims of the world or the deliberate designs of a sorcerer, these entities serve as guardians of the deep, ensuring that only the worthy survive their deceptive embrace.
In Their Own Story
The lantern flickered against the cavern wall, casting long, dancing shadows that seemed to reach for you. Ahead sat a solitary Gold Chest, its surface gleaming with an inviting warmth that promised fortune in this cold, damp dark. You stepped closer, your boots crunching on loose stone, eyes fixed on the prize. The air grew heavy, charged with a sudden, electric tension. As your hand hovered over the latch, the chest did not open; it shrieked.
With a sound of tearing metal and grinding stone, the lid sprang upward to reveal jagged teeth and glowing malice. The Gold Chest was gone, replaced by a hulking beast that hopped forward with terrifying speed. It lunged, its movements jerky yet relentless, driven by an insatiable hunger. You rolled aside as its clawed appendage slammed into the ground where you had stood seconds before. Dust billowed around you as you drew your weapon, the illusion shattered forever. This was no treasure to be claimed, but a predator to be slain. The battle was brief and brutal, the mimic's false form finally collapsing into a pile of loot and dust, leaving only the memory of its deception.
Reader's Guide
Mimics appear exclusively in Hardmode worlds within Surface, Underground, Cavern, and Underworld layers, though specific seeds can alter this. They disguise themselves as standard chests appropriate to their biome: regular chests above the Underground layer, Gold Chests below, and Shadow Chests in the Underworld. Snow biomes host ice-themed Mimics resembling Frozen Chests.
These enemies are highly aggressive, hopping toward players upon detection. Their attack pattern involves three successive hops followed by a special move. Common variants deal moderate damage but possess high defense and knockback resistance. Biome Mimics (Corrupt, Crimson, Hallowed, Jungle) are significantly tougher, with the Jungle variant capable of hurling blocks at long range.
To farm them efficiently, expose unsafe Dirt Walls on the surface or below, as Mimics spawn more frequently there. In Hardmode, you can manually summon Biome Mimics by placing a Key of Light or Key of Night inside an empty chest and closing it. Defeating them yields coins and unique accessories like the Dual Hook, Magic Dagger, or biome-specific weapons such as the Daedalus Stormbow and Fetid Baghnakhs. Note that Corrupt, Crimson, and Hallowed Mimics require only 25 kills for their Bestiary entry instead of the standard 50.
