Medusa
Gaze not into the marble abyss, lest you become its newest statue
Medusa is a Hardmode enemy found near Marble Caves , and is a relatively fast-moving melee attacker who has the unique ability to inflict the Stoned debuff through her gaze. This debuff deals 20 / 40 / 60 damage to the player and petrifies them, turning them into stone. The debuff's onset is marked by Medusa's snake hair (as well as Medusa herself) lashing out red tongues, accompanied by a unique noise and a yellow particle effect, giving players notice before they are petrified. Players can avoid getting Stoned by facing the other direction when the animation completes, or by having Medusa's line of sight blocked by solid blocks. The less health Medusa has, the faster she will move, similar to Mummies . Her speed increases linearly from 8 mph at full health to 18 mph just before dying. She is one of the few entities that can be detected by the Lifeform Analyzer or its upgrades. - Item (Quantity) Rate - Pizza 2% - Medusa Head 4% - Pocket Mirror 2.5% 5% - Internal NPC ID : 480 - Internal Buff ID : 156 - The player will be unable to move or use items for the duration of the debuff, similar to the Frozen debuff. - Fall damage-negating accessories are disabled, fall damage is increased, and the minimum distance for fall damage to occur is reduced. - 1 Notes - 2 Tips - 3 Trivia - 4 History - 5 References

Lore & Background
Deep within the cooling veins of the world, where stone is polished by ancient tides, dwells a fragment of forgotten myth. The Medusa is no mere monster but a guardian of the Marble Caves, an entity born from the very geology she protects. Her serpentine locks writhe with a life of their own, sensing intruders long before they breach the cavern's silence. She is a relic of a time when gods walked among mortals, now reduced to a wandering curse that turns flesh into cold rock with a single glance.
The legend speaks of her gaze as a weapon of absolute stillness. When she lashes out, red tongues of energy pierce the darkness, heralding a transformation that defies the natural order. To look upon her face is to invite a fate worse than death; your movement ceases, your breath halts, and gravity becomes a cruel executioner. Even in this petrified state, your spirit remains aware, trapped within stone while the world continues its chaotic dance around you. She is the ultimate test of caution, forcing travelers to fight with their backs turned or risk becoming part of the cave's eternal gallery.
In Their Own Story
You descend into the cool, polished depths of the Marble Cave, the air thick with silence. The walls gleam in the pale light of your torch, but something feels wrong. A low hiss cuts through the quiet, followed by the sound of scales sliding against stone. You turn to face the intruder, and there she stands: a figure of terrifying grace, her hair a writhing mass of venomous serpents.
Her eyes lock onto yours, and the world narrows to a single point of red light. A strange noise fills your ears as yellow particles dance in the air before you. Instinct screams at you to look away, but it is too late. Your muscles lock tight. You try to raise your sword, but your limbs are heavy as lead. The stone creeps up your legs, freezing you in place. As your vision blurs and turns grey, you hear the scuttle of bats and the clatter of Hoplite armor approaching. You are a statue now, helpless against the gravity that waits to shatter your form.
Reader's Guide
Medusa is a Hardmode enemy exclusive to Marble Caves, distinguished by her rapid movement and deadly gaze. She patrols these polished tunnels alone; naturally, only one can exist in a world at a time unless spawned via statue. Her speed increases drastically as she takes damage, accelerating from a moderate pace to a terrifying sprint just before death.
Her primary threat is the Stoned debuff, inflicted when her snake hair lashes out with red energy. This turns the player into stone for 1–4 seconds, disabling movement and item use while nullifying fall-damage negation accessories. To survive, you must either break her line of sight with blocks or face away from her during combat. Weapons that allow fighting from behind are ideal, such as Yoyos, Magic Missiles, and the Flying Knife.
Notably, the Medusa Head drop allows players to return the favor by staring at enemies while looking away, creating a unique tactical advantage. For farming, ensure no other Medusas are present in the world. Defeating her yields coins, a 2% chance for Pizza, a 4% chance for the Medusa Head, and a 2.5% (or 5% with certain modifiers) chance for the Pocket Mirror.
