Hoppin' Jack

Lore & Background

In the shadowed corners of a graveyard or under the pale moonlight of an autumn night, the Hoppin' Jack stirs. Born from the malice of a pumpkin that remembers the cold steel of carving, this entity is not merely a vegetable animated by magic, but a vengeful spirit seeking retribution for its disfigurement. Folklore whispers that Spring-heeled Jack inspired this spectral gourd, yet in Terraria's world, it stands alone as a guardian of the season and the sacred dead.

Unlike the mindless slimes that dot the landscape, the Hoppin' Jack possesses a cruel intelligence born of pain. As its orange flesh is cut deeper by blades or magic, the creature does not slow; instead, it accelerates, driven by a frantic need to end the threat before it is extinguished entirely. It hops with a rhythmic, bouncing gait that mimics the simple slimes, yet carries no gelatinous residue, for its body is solid and dry, fueled only by hatred.

These creatures are rare visitors outside their designated times, appearing only when the air turns crisp or the soil reeks of fresh graves. They serve as a reminder that even inanimate objects can harbor a soul when twisted by tragedy. To encounter one is to face a foe that grows more dangerous with every strike you land, a paradoxical challenge where victory requires not just strength, but speed before the pumpkin's final breath.

In Their Own Story

The moon hung low and heavy over the graveyard, casting long, skeletal shadows across the tombstones. You stepped carefully through the mist, your torch flickering against the encroaching dark, when a soft thud broke the silence. From behind an ancient crypt, the Hoppin' Jack emerged. Its carved face grinned with malevolent glee, hollow eyes glowing with an inner fire.

It launched itself toward you, bouncing with the deceptive innocence of a common slime, but the air around it felt charged with static. You swung your sword, the blade slicing through its tough rind and sending orange chunks flying. The creature did not crumble; instead, it bounced higher, its movements becoming erratic and terrifyingly fast. Every wound you inflicted seemed to fuel its fury, turning a slow hop into a frantic series of blurs.

You realized too late that this was not an enemy that weakened with damage. As your strikes landed, the Hoppin' Jack closed the distance in mere heartbeats, its jagged teeth inches from your face. You rolled aside just as it crashed where you had stood, the ground trembling under its impact. With a final, desperate lunge, you drove your weapon home, silencing the pumpkin's vengeful spirit before it could complete its frantic dance.

Reader's Guide

The Hoppin' Jack is a Hardmode enemy exclusive to two specific conditions: it spawns exclusively at night during the Halloween seasonal event on Desktop, Console, and Mobile versions, or in any Graveyard biome regardless of the time of year. It utilizes standard Slime AI, hopping directly toward players, but possesses a unique mechanic where its movement speed increases significantly as its health decreases.

Combat requires careful positioning. Since it never stops accelerating as you damage it, do not attempt to kite it with long-range weapons unless you are confident in your aim, as it will close the gap rapidly at low health. Melee fighters must maintain distance or use hit-and-run tactics to avoid being overwhelmed by its speed. Its base stats include 80/160/240 damage and 20 defense, making it a significant threat in Normal, Expert, and Master modes respectively.

Farming this enemy is best done by constructing a Graveyard biome using multiple tombstones, allowing for year-round spawns without waiting for the Halloween event. Upon defeat, it drops coins ranging from 5 Silver to 12 Gold 50 Copper depending on difficulty. Notably, it drops no Gel and does not count toward slime-related achievements like Gelatin World Tour or Slimer.
