Hoplite
Ancient marble guardians hurl piercing javelins from the deep
The Hoplite is a pre-Hardmode enemy that spawns in Marble Caves . It throws piercing Javelins at the player, which deals immense damage, especially in Expert Mode or Master Mode . The Javelins they throw are also fairly accurate and are more likely to hit the player than most other enemy-fired projectiles. This makes the Hoplite an enemy to avoid early on in the game until players are properly equipped and ready to face them. - Item (Quantity) Rate - Pizza 2% - Javelin (40–80) 50% - Only one of the following three items can drop - Gladiator Helmet 4.76% - Gladiator Breastplate 4.76% - Gladiator Leggings 4.76% - Gladius 5% - Hook 4% - Stress Ball 1% - Javelin (hostile) - Internal NPC ID : 481 - Internal Projectile ID : 508

Lore & Background
In the sunken crypts of a forgotten civilization, where white stone has turned cold and silent, the Hoplite endures as a spectral sentinel of a bygone era. These undead soldiers, remnants of an army that once defended marble palaces, now patrol the subterranean caverns in eternal vigilance. Their armor, though weathered by millennia of darkness, still bears the faint echo of golden Greek patterns, hinting at a glory long extinguished. They move with a stoic determination, their hollow eyes fixed on any intruder daring to tread upon their sacred ruins.
The Hoplite does not fight as a mindless beast but as a disciplined tactician, wielding the spear with lethal precision. Unlike other undead that rely solely on brute force or clumsy swings, these entities launch javelins that pierce through flesh and stone alike, striking true even in the dimmest depths. Their combat style reflects the ancient martial traditions they once upheld, prioritizing accuracy and range over wild aggression. Yet, their high resistance to knockback suggests an unyielding will; they cannot be easily pushed back from their posts, forcing any challenger to close the distance at great peril.
To the few who survive the encounter, the Hoplite offers a glimpse into this lost culture through scattered relics. The gladius and armor pieces found upon them are not merely loot but fragments of history, recovered from the hands of soldiers who refuse to lay down their arms even in death. These artifacts serve as a reminder that some civilizations never truly fall; they simply wait beneath the earth for those brave enough to uncover their secrets.
In Their Own Story
You descend into the cool embrace of the Marble Cave, your torchlight flickering against walls of pristine white stone. The silence is absolute until a metallic clank echoes from the shadows ahead. A skeletal figure steps forward, its bones reinforced with weathered bronze plating that gleams faintly in your light. It raises an arm, and you see the glint of a javelin balanced perfectly on its palm.
You hesitate, but the Hoplite does not. With a fluid motion born of ancient muscle memory, it hurls the spear. The projectile screams through the air, piercing your shoulder before you can dodge. Pain flares as the weapon passes straight through your body, landing harmlessly against the stone behind you. You realize too late that the javelin strikes twice—once on the ascent and again on its descent.
Retreating is impossible; the enemy's high resistance to knockback keeps it advancing steadily despite your frantic blows. It closes the gap with terrifying speed, forcing you into melee combat where its damage is lower but still deadly. You manage to stun-lock it, hammering away at its brittle frame until it crumbles into dust, leaving behind a gladius and a strange stress ball as the only proof of your survival.
Reader's Guide
The Hoplite appears exclusively in Marble Caves during the Pre-Hardmode phase of your journey. As an undead enemy utilizing Fighter AI, it poses a significant threat to early-game players due to its ability to launch accurate, piercing Javelins that deal immense damage, particularly in Expert and Master Modes.
Its primary attack involves throwing javelins with high precision, often hitting targets more reliably than other ranged enemies. Be wary of attacking from directly above, as the piercing nature of the weapon can strike you once on its way up and again on its descent. While it deals moderate contact damage, its 60% knockback resistance allows it to close distances quickly if you attempt to stun-lock it.
To defeat them safely, rush the Hoplite immediately upon spawn to prevent it from launching ranged attacks, as it cannot attack while being damaged. However, maintain pressure due to their high knockback resistance. For farming, target them for a 50% chance of Javelins (40-80 quantity) and a 2% drop rate for the Pizza. There is also a small chance (approx. 4.76% each) to receive Gladiator armor pieces or a 5% chance for the Gladius. Avoid engaging until you have adequate defense and mobility.
