The Goldfish is a critter that swims in water and walks on land during rain . It flops in place when out of water and rain; it does not take damage while doing so. The Goldfish has only 5 health and no defense , and can be damaged by other enemies and players. The Goldfish can be caught with any Bug Net to be carried around in the inventory and released later, or crafted into animated decorative furniture ( Fish Bowl ). Once crafted, the Goldfish cannot be released again, unless the furniture item is de-crafted via Shimmer (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) . The Goldfish can be spawned by the Fish Statue , however statue-spawned critters cannot be caught with any Bug Net, and will disappear in a puff of smoke when the player attempts to do so. On the Desktop version , Console version , and Mobile version , there is a 1/400 (0.25%) chance for a Gold Goldfish to spawn in place of an ordinary one. During a Blood Moon , or when hit with Vile Powder / Vicious Powder (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) , Goldfish will turn into Corrupt Goldfish or Vicious Goldfish (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) . - Internal Item ID : 261 - Internal Tile ID : 724 - Internal NPC ID : 55 - Internal NPC ID : 230 - 1 Crafting 1.1 Used in - 2 Notes - 3 Trivia - 4 History

Lore & Background

In the quiet corners of Terraria's waters, the Goldfish drifts as a symbol of serene simplicity, its golden scales catching the light beneath the surface. It is a creature of dual nature, content to glide through lakes and rivers until the sky turns gray and heavy with rain. When the storm breaks, this gentle swimmer defies expectation, venturing onto dry land to flail in a desperate, rhythmic dance, seeking the moisture that sustains it. Though it possesses no claws or teeth, its resilience is legendary; stranded on stone, it takes no damage from the harsh world, merely waiting for the clouds to pass or the rain to continue.

Legends speak of a rare golden variant, appearing only once in every four hundred births, shimmering with an ethereal light that marks it as a treasure. Yet, even this peaceful existence can be twisted by malice. Under the crimson gaze of a Blood Moon or dusted with vile powders, the Goldfish mutates into a Corrupt or Vicious form, its eyes turning from black to a bloodshot red before it meets its end. Once caught in a Bug Net, the creature becomes a vessel for both utility and art, capable of being crafted into a Fish Bowl where it swims eternally, forever smiling at its captor.

The Goldfish remains one of the few creatures to claim its own banner, a testament to its unique place in the ecosystem. From its humble origins as a healing potion in ancient eras to its current role as a decorative wonder, it serves as a reminder that even the smallest life forms have stories worth telling. Whether swimming backward against a block or spinning as it falls from the sky during a storm, the Goldfish is a whimsical constant in a world of chaos.

In Their Own Story

You stand at the edge of the jungle lake, the air thick with the scent of ozone and wet earth. The first drops begin to fall, tapping gently against your armor, but it is the water that catches your eye. A small, golden shape breaks the surface, not swimming away, but leaping onto the muddy bank. It flops there, a rhythmic thrashing of fins against the stone, unbothered by the dryness or the looming threat of predators.

You watch in fascination as it attempts to navigate the terrain, its tiny legs moving with surprising determination despite having no true limbs for land travel. The rain intensifies, turning the world into a gray blur, yet the Goldfish presses on, flailing toward deeper water that seems miles away. Suddenly, a shadow looms—a Jungle Slime bounces nearby, oblivious to the small creature in its path. You reach out instinctively, your Bug Net snapping shut just as the slime lands, sparing the tiny swimmer from an untimely end.

Inside the net, it spins and flutters, a captured piece of the storm's magic. You recall the old tales of those who turn such creatures into living ornaments, trapping them in glass bowls to smile eternally at their keepers. As you release it back into the rising tide, it pauses for a heartbeat, its black eyes meeting yours before it darts away, leaving only ripples and the memory of a golden moment amidst the rain.

Reader's Guide

The Goldfish is a benign critter found in all water bodies during Rain events. While rain falls, they will leave their aquatic homes to walk on land, flopping in place if the weather clears or they are stranded away from water. They possess only 5 health and zero defense, making them vulnerable to other enemies and player attacks, though they cannot take damage while flailing out of water.

To farm or collect them, use any Bug Net during a rainy day. Note that Goldfish spawned via statues cannot be caught; they will vanish in smoke upon interaction. On Desktop, Console, and Mobile versions, there is a 1/400 chance for a rare Gold Goldfish to spawn. Be wary of Blood Moons or Vile/Vicious Powder, as these transform them into hostile Corrupt or Vicious variants that cannot be caught.

Once captured, they serve multiple purposes. They can be sold directly for 75 Silver Coins (Desktop/Console/Mobile) or crafted into a Fish Bowl for decoration, which is the most profitable method. The bowl cannot be de-crafted to release the fish unless Shimmer is available. Additionally, they are used in crafting Bottled Water and other items. Remember that walking Goldfish will not stop moving when rain ends until they re-enter water, often attempting to walk off-screen to despawn.
