Lore & Background

In the chaotic ranks of the Goblin Army, a rare few rise above the crude melee of their kin to wield the forbidden arts of shadow manipulation. These Goblin Sorcerers are said to be ancient hex-casters who have tapped into a primal, magicked energy that flows through the Underworld and surfaces only when the goblin hordes march upon civilization. Though primitive in appearance compared to the sorcerers of other realms, they possess a cunning intellect that allows them to weave destructive spells with terrifying precision.

When the war drums beat and the goblins advance, one out of every nine warriors is this shadow-weaver, standing apart from the charging horde. They do not rely on brute force but instead conjure spheres of pure chaos that pierce stone and earth alike. Their mastery of teleportation allows them to reposition instantly, appearing atop solid ground only to unleash a volley of three arcane projectiles before vanishing once more. To the untrained eye, they seem like mere goblins, but their ability to bend space and summon destruction marks them as true threats within the army.

The Bestiary records that these creatures manipulate shadow energy through a form of hexing, a dark art that predates the current conflict. Their presence signals a shift in the tide of battle, turning a simple skirmish into a magical siege where the very ground offers no protection against their chaotic barrage.

In Their Own Story

The goblin war cry echoes across the plains, but amidst the cacophony of clashing steel and snarling beasts, you spot the anomaly. A Goblin Sorcerer stands apart, its green skin glowing faintly with unnatural violet light as it raises a gnarled staff. It does not charge like its kin; instead, it hovers for a heartbeat before vanishing in a puff of smoke. You spin around, heart pounding, just as it reappears on a nearby ledge, perfectly framed against the setting sun.

Three spheres of swirling chaos materialize above its head, humming with a low, dangerous vibration. The Sorcerer pauses, eyes locked on yours, before releasing them in rapid succession. They tear through the air, ignoring the boulders and trees that should have blocked their path. You dive behind a stone wall, feeling the heat as the orbs shatter against it, leaving scorched craters in the rock. The enemy teleports again, resetting its position with eerie silence.

You realize too late that standing still is death. As you rush forward to close the distance, the Sorcerer prepares another volley. You swing your blade, the metal connecting with the creature just as it begins its chant. The attack breaks its concentration, sending the chaotic energy dissipating into harmless sparks. With a frustrated screech, the goblin stumbles back, its magical dominance broken by a single well-timed strike.

Reader's Guide

The Goblin Sorcerer is a pre-Hardmode enemy that appears exclusively during the Goblin Army invasion event. Roughly one in nine goblins summoned will be this caster variant. It utilizes Caster AI, teleporting to solid blocks within 41 tiles of the player and firing three Chaos Balls that pass through terrain.

Its threat lies in its mobility and ranged power; it cannot attack or teleport while taking damage, but if left alone, it fires chaos orbs with a 1.67-second windup every 10.83 seconds after an initial 2.5-second delay. To defeat one effectively, maintain constant pressure to interrupt its casting cycle. Aim for the head where projectiles originate, or use melee weapons and other projectiles to destroy the Chaos Balls mid-flight.

Farming this enemy yields a 49.75% chance for Spiky Balls (1-5) and a rare 0.5% drop rate for the Harpoon. It is best engaged during the day when visibility is high, as its teleportation can be visually tracked by the shadow energy it manipulates.
