Diabolist
Undead sorcerers of the deep dungeon summon scorching infernos that burn through stone and sanity alike
The Diabolist is a Hardmode , post- Plantera enemy that spawns in the Dungeon after Plantera is defeated. It attacks by firing Inferno Bolts at the player, which can travel through blocks . In addition to dealing direct damage to the player, the bolts also explode upon reaching where they were aimed at, creating a large flaming sphere that lasts for 9 seconds and deals massive damage on contact. Both the bolts and the spheres inflict the On Fire! debuff for 8–15 / 16–30 / 20–37.5 seconds. Diabolists teleport to a different location on-screen after firing three projectiles or upon being hit. Diabolists spawn most often in areas of the Dungeon backed by tiled walls . They can also spawn in other areas, but with a significantly reduced chance. - Item (Quantity) Rate - Inferno Fork 5% (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) / 2.5% (Old-gen console and 3DS versions) 9.75% - Inferno Bolt (hostile) - Inferno Blast (hostile) - Internal Buff ID : 24 - Internal Projectile ID : 291 , 292 - 1 Variants - 2 Notes - 3 Tips - 4 Trivia - 5 History - 6 References

Lore & Background
Deep within the crumbling corridors of the post-Plantera Dungeon, where the air grows thick with ancient dust and forgotten magic, the Diabolist stirs. These are not mere skeletons animated by simple necromancy, but undead scholars who have traded their mortal souls for the power of the underworld itself. Bearing the Diabolic Sigil upon their robed forms, they channel flames so intense they seem to consume the very fabric of reality, turning the cool stone of the dungeon into a crucible of eternal fire.
Legend speaks of these casters as guardians of a terrible secret, twisted by the same dark energies that once bound the Plantera. When they raise their arms, they do not merely cast spells; they tear open rifts in the air, firing bolts of pure infernal heat that ignore physical barriers. The resulting explosions leave behind lingering spheres of fire that dance for nearly ten seconds, a testament to the chaotic power they wield. They are elusive, shifting positions with unnatural speed to maintain their distance from intruders, ensuring that no one can stand close enough to silence their chanting.
To encounter a Diabolist is to invite a scorching fate. Their presence marks the dungeon as fully transformed into a realm of danger, where the walls themselves seem to breathe heat. They are the ultimate test for those who dare to delve deeper after the defeat of the jungle's guardian, demanding that adventurers master both their weapons and their movement to survive the inferno they bring.
In Their Own Story
The lantern flickered, casting long, dancing shadows against the tiled walls of the dungeon. You stepped forward, your boots crunching on ancient debris, until a sudden warmth prickled at the back of your neck. From the darkness ahead, a figure materialized—not walking, but appearing in a flash of displaced air. It was a Diabolist, its skeletal frame draped in tattered robes that seemed to smolder with an inner fire.
Before you could raise your weapon, it raised a bony hand. A bolt of orange and red light screamed from its palm, passing effortlessly through the stone pillar beside you. It struck the far wall and detonated, not into shrapnel, but into a massive, blooming sphere of flame that hung in the air, hissing with malevolent energy. The heat was instantaneous, searing your skin as the On Fire! debuff took hold.
The creature vanished again, reappearing on a ledge above you, three bolts already charged in its grasp. You tried to dodge, but the projectiles tracked your movement, weaving through the dungeon's architecture with impossible accuracy. Each impact sent a wave of fire rippling outward. Realizing that hiding behind stone was futile, you drew a weapon capable of tracking its erratic movements. The Diabolist teleported once more, but this time, your attack followed it through the void, striking true before it could unleash another inferno.
Reader's Guide
The Diabolist is a formidable Hardmode enemy that spawns exclusively in the Dungeon after Plantera has been defeated. It favors areas backed by unsafe dungeon walls and will only teleport to locations meeting strict spatial requirements: solid blocks below, no lava above, and clear space for its three-tile-wide, four-tile-high clearance.
Its attack pattern is dangerous and relentless. After a brief windup, it fires Inferno Bolts that pass through blocks and explode into large flaming spheres lasting nine seconds. Both the bolts and the resulting fire inflict the severe On Fire! debuff for up to 37.5 seconds on Master Mode. The Diabolist teleports immediately after spawning, then every 6.67 seconds or upon taking damage, always firing three projectiles per stationary phase.
To defeat it, avoid static cover since its shots ignore walls. Use homing weapons, minions, or the Piranha Gun to track it through teleportations. High single-hit damage is effective before it can reposition. For farming, construct a trap where safe tiles are limited; placing pressure plates with Spiky Ball Traps in valid teleport zones will halt their attacks and eliminate them safely.
Upon defeat, they drop 15 to 37 Silver Coins and have a chance to yield the Inferno Fork, a powerful ranged weapon that fires explosive bolts capable of piercing enemies.
Did You Know?
- The Diabolist teleports immediately upon spawning, resetting its attack pattern if no valid destination is found.
- Its teleportation requires an unsafe dungeon wall directly above the destination block and cannot occur within lava.
- Inferno Bolts travel through solid blocks before exploding into a fire sphere that persists for 9 seconds.
- The Bestiary describes them as undead bearing the Diabolic Sigil who wield flames as intense as those in the underworld.
