Lore & Background

Unlike their nocturnal kin that stalk in darkness, these leaping horrors emerge only when the sun is high, replacing the Giant Flying Foxes to patrol the treetops. They move with a frantic, erratic grace, strafe-jumping through the air as if defying gravity itself before attempting to land squarely upon their prey. Their relentless spawning suggests an infestation that can quickly overwhelm even the most seasoned explorer, turning a peaceful daytime trek into a desperate battle for survival against a tide of sapphire shells.

In Their Own Story

You rolled aside just as the creature landed where you stood, the impact shaking the ground. It recovered instantly, bouncing again in a chaotic arc toward your flank. The air filled with the sound of chittering as more appeared from the foliage, a swarm of these blood-draining fleas descending upon you. Your heart hammered against your ribs as you realized the Bestiary's warning was no exaggeration. One hit could drain you dry; seconds were all you had left before the sapphire shells consumed you whole.

Reader's Guide

Derplings are Hardmode enemies exclusive to the surface Jungle during daylight hours, replacing Giant Flying Foxes which spawn at night. They utilize the Herpling AI, characterized by high jumps and mid-air strafing maneuvers designed to land directly on top of players.

Their threat level is severe due to their rapid spawn rates and high damage output (80/160/240 across difficulties). With 300/600/900 health and 50-60% knockback resistance, they are difficult to stagger. Defeat them quickly with area-of-effect weapons or high-damage ranged attacks before a swarm overwhelms you.

Farming these enemies yields coins and rare drops: Grapes (2.5%) and the extremely rare Glommer's Flower (1%). The drop rate is low, so patience and efficient crowd control are essential for successful collection of these unique items.
