Lore & Background

Bound by ancient curses within the crumbling stone halls of the Dungeon, these spectral archmages wander as restless spirits of forgotten magic. Doomed to watch over their subterranean prison, they are neither fully alive nor truly dead, but rather echoes of a time when the Dungeon was a place of arcane study rather than a tomb of monsters. Their minds are fractured by centuries of isolation, leaving them with only the instinct to confuse and destroy any intruder who dares disturb their slumber.

When threatened, they do not stand their ground like common undead but instead vanish in a puff of shadowy smoke, reappearing at a safe distance to unleash their signature assault. They conjure spheres of pressurized water that defy gravity and solidity alike, passing through stone walls as if they were mere mist before striking with the force of a tidal wave. This erratic movement pattern serves both as a defense mechanism and a psychological weapon, disorienting prey before the final blow is struck.

Some among them wear the tattered remnants of red wizard hats, hinting at a darker origin linked to the skeletal guardians of the Dungeon's entrance. Whether these are merely variations in their spectral garb or the result of a specific ritual performed by Skeletron remains lost to time, but their presence signals that the magic within these walls is far from dormant.

In Their Own Story

You step deeper into the gloom, your torchlight flickering against damp stone. The air grows heavy with static electricity before you see him: a robed figure hovering just out of reach. He raises a skeletal hand, and three glowing orbs of water materialize in midair. Before you can react, he vanishes. A moment later, he reappears behind your shield, the water spheres tearing through the brickwork as if it were paper.

You swing your sword wildly, desperate to catch him, but he is already gone again. The projectiles scream past your ear, shattering against a far wall and revealing hidden corridors you had never seen. Panic sets in as you realize the water passes right through the floor beneath you. You manage to land a glancing blow just as he begins his incantation once more, freezing him in place for a split second before he teleports away again.

In that brief window of stillness, you strike true. The figure dissolves into bones and dust, leaving behind only the clatter of a golden key and the faint scent of ozone. You pick up the loot, your heart racing, knowing that in this place, silence is often the prelude to another teleportation.

Reader's Guide

The Dark Caster resides exclusively within the Dungeon, appearing from Pre-Hardmode through Hardmode. They utilize a unique Caster AI, firing three Water Spheres that travel through blocks before teleporting to a new location on screen.

Threat Level: Moderate to High in Expert Mode. While their base damage is manageable early on, their projectiles deal over 100 damage in Hardmode Expert Mode, capable of one-shotting unprepared characters. Their 40% knockback resistance makes them difficult to stagger.

Combat Strategy: Interrupting their attack is key. Striking the Dark Caster even once while it is charging a Water Sphere will cancel the attack and force an immediate teleport. Use this mechanic to control the fight. Be careful not to confuse their water projectiles with the Water Bolt spell; if a projectile passes through a wall, it is hostile.

Farming & Drops: These enemies are valuable for mapping as their water spheres reveal terrain behind walls. Notable drops include the rare Clothier Voodoo Doll (0.33%) and the Ancient Necro Helmet (0.22%). They also have a chance to drop the Bone Wand, Tally Counter, or Golden Key. In Hardmode, they always drop 2-6 bones.
