Cursed Skull

An undead relic of dark rituals that silences the living with a single touch

The Cursed Skull is a pre-Hardmode flying enemy that spawns in the Dungeon . It is similar to the Meteor Head , with high damage, slow speed, and the ability to travel through tiles. It floats slowly towards the player, occasionally stopping to float in a circle around them for a while, before suddenly lunging forward to attack, similar to the Eye of Cthulhu . Upon striking a player, the Cursed Skull has a 1/3 (33.33%) chance of inflicting the Cursed debuff for 4 / 8 / 10 seconds. This renders the player unable to use items, including weapons , potions , and hooks , making it very difficult to avoid taking further damage. Cursed Skulls spawn most often in areas of the Dungeon backed by brick walls . They can also spawn in other areas, but with a significantly reduced chance. - Item (Quantity) Rate - Cream Soda 1.43% - One of the following four items will always be dropped - Bone Wand 0.4% - Tally Counter 1% - Golden Key 1.52% - Bone (1–3) 97.09% - Only one of the following three items can be dropped at a time - Bone Wand 0.4% - Tally Counter 1% - Golden Key 1.52% - Bone ( 2–6 ) 100% - Nazar 1% 1.99% - Internal NPC ID : 34 - Internal Buff ID : 23

Lore & Background

Deep within the damp, brick-lined corridors of the Dungeon, where light struggles to penetrate the gloom, certain bones have forgotten their rest. Subjected to ancient and forbidden rites, these skulls were stripped of their original purpose and bound by malevolent forces to drift eternally in search of warmth. They are not merely animated remains but vessels of a cursed will, hovering with an unnatural gravity that defies the laws of nature known to mortals. Their presence is often heralded by the cold draft of a nearby brick wall, for it is there that their dark magic finds its strongest anchor.

When these spectral wanderers lock onto a living soul, they do not rush blindly. Instead, they dance in slow, deliberate circles, observing with hollow eyes before launching a sudden, terrifying lunge. This predatory rhythm mimics the heartbeat of nightmares, designed to instill dread before the strike. To be touched by such an entity is to feel one's very agency stripped away; the Cursed debuff renders the victim unable to raise a weapon, drink a healing potion, or even swing a grappling hook. In those precious seconds of paralysis, the skull delivers its final judgment, leaving the adventurer defenseless against the encroaching darkness.

In Their Own Story

You tread carefully through the narrow stone passage, your torch flickering against the damp brickwork that lines the walls. The air grows heavy, smelling of ancient dust and ozone. Suddenly, a low hum vibrates in your chest. You look up to see it: a Cursed Skull, drifting lazily just beyond the reach of your light. It pauses, rotating slowly on its axis as if studying your heartbeat through the brick itself.

You raise your sword, ready for combat, but the skull does not attack immediately. It begins to circle you, a silent orbit that tightens with every rotation. Your heart hammers against your ribs, anticipating the strike. Then, in a flash of motion too fast to track, it lunges. The impact is cold and heavy, sending a shockwave through your limbs. Suddenly, your arm goes numb; your sword slips from fingers that will not obey. You reach for a healing potion, but your hand remains frozen at your side. The skull hovers closer, its hollow gaze mocking your helplessness as the darkness closes in, waiting for you to fall.

Reader's Guide

The Cursed Skull is a pre-Hardmode flying enemy found exclusively within the Dungeon, most frequently spawning in areas backed by brick walls. While they can appear elsewhere, their density drops significantly outside these specific structural conditions.

These enemies possess high damage output and slow movement but are capable of passing through solid tiles. Their attack pattern involves floating toward the player, pausing to circle them briefly, and then lunging forward with sudden speed. Upon contact, there is a 33% chance to inflict the Cursed debuff for 4 to 10 seconds depending on difficulty, completely preventing item usage including weapons, potions, and grappling hooks.

To combat them effectively, utilize melee weapons capable of attacking through blocks, such as spears or the Vilethorn. Be aware that drops may become trapped inside walls; using a Treasure Magnet or mining the block can retrieve them. They are an excellent farming target for the Nazar drop due to their higher spawn rates compared to other sources.

Notable drops include the Bone Wand (0.4%), Tally Counter (1%), and Golden Key (1.52%). Additionally, they always drop between 1-6 Bones, with a small chance to drop Cream Soda (1.43%).
