Lore & Background
Scholars of the old world whisper that these creatures may be twisted reflections of the harmless Man Eaters found in the surface jungle, warped by the malignant influence of the shadow. Unlike other foes that charge blindly, the Clinger possesses a terrifying patience, cycling between dormant stillness and an extended reach that stretches nearly fifteen tiles into the darkness. They are immune to the hellish heat of lava, for they are born of a fire far older and more corrupt than magma. To face them is to stare into a maw that never closes, waiting for a single misstep before unleashing the Cursed Inferno.
In Their Own Story
You descend into the violet gloom, your pickaxe glowing faintly against the encroaching shadow. The air tastes of copper and decay. Suddenly, a sickening *thrum* echoes from the wall ahead. There it is: a Clinger, its fleshy stem stretched to its limit, head bobbing like a predatory flower in a toxic wind. It locks eyes with you, unblinking, before unleashing a stream of emerald fire that sears the air. You dodge left, but the heat lingers, and your skin begins to prickle as the Cursed Inferno takes hold. The creature retracts slightly, then lunges forward again, its stem extending further than you thought possible. You strike hard, interrupting its rhythm, forcing it back into a defensive posture. With every blow, the green flames falter until finally, the stem snaps and the beast collapses, leaving behind only the lingering scent of burnt ash and the faint glow of Cursed Flames on the ground.
Reader's Guide
The Clinger is a Hardmode enemy exclusive to the Underground Corruption biome. Unlike mobile foes, it remains anchored to a block, utilizing a unique Plant AI that cycles between two states: a normal reach of roughly eleven tiles for five seconds, and an extended reach of over fourteen tiles for two and a half seconds.
Its primary threat lies in its ranged attack. If line-of-sight is established, the Clinger fires Cursed Flame projectiles every two seconds. These hits inflict the Cursed Inferno debuff, causing continuous life loss for several seconds with a high chance of 68.75%. A crucial mechanic to remember is that hitting the Clinger resets its attack cooldown back to two seconds; therefore, constant aggression prevents it from firing.
To farm this enemy effectively, locate the Underground Corruption and clear out large caverns to ensure line-of-sight. While they do not appear on the surface, they are a reliable source of Cursed Flames, which drop 100% of the time. They also have a small chance to drop the Meat Grinder or Monster Meat, and an even rarer chance for the Eater of Life. Note that mining the block they are attached to will kill them instantly on certain versions, but this prevents any drops from occurring.
