Chaos Elemental
A once-human soul twisted by Hallowed light into a frantic vortex of pink energy.
The Chaos Elemental is a Hardmode enemy that spawns on Pearlstone , Pearlsand and Pink Ice Blocks in the Cavern layer . It runs around and teleports quickly, attempting to damage the player by making contact. It will teleport anywhere in a random position within 20 tiles from its target, but at least 4 tiles away, and only into a space that is at least 4 tiles tall and 3 tiles wide. It will not teleport into lava , though it can easily fall into it after teleporting. Like many Underground Hallow enemies, Chaos Elementals have a glowing pink after-image. - Item (Quantity) Rate - Apple Pie 0.67% - Rod of Discord 0.2% 0.25% - Crystallize 0.5% 0.67% - Internal NPC ID : 120 - 1 Notes - 2 Tips - 3 Trivia - 4 History - 5 References

Lore & Background
Deep within the glittering caverns of the Underground Hallow, where the very stone sings with purification, a tragic transformation occurs. These were once living beings who received the world's blessing, only to be consumed by an uncontrollable surge of luminous power. Now they are Chaos Elementals, fractured spirits bound to Pearlstone and Pearlsand, forever dancing between reality and the void. They no longer remember their former selves, driven solely by a frenetic need to discharge their excess energy upon any intruder who dares tread their sacred, glowing grounds.
The elementals do not walk; they flicker across the landscape in bursts of blinding pink light, leaving ghostly after-images that linger like memories. They are creatures of pure instability, capable of teleporting instantly to escape danger or close the distance with terrifying speed. Yet, they are bound by ancient laws of physics they cannot fully comprehend, unable to phase through lava or occupy spaces too small for their chaotic forms. To witness one is to see a soul caught in an eternal loop of creation and destruction, a beacon of dangerous beauty that demands either reverence or immediate eradication.
Scholars of the Hallow whisper that these entities are the price of purity paid in full. They are the shadow behind the light, the madness hidden within the blessing. When they strike, it is not with malice but with the mindless urgency of a storm, their bodies dissolving into particles of light only to reform moments later, relentless and unyielding in their pursuit of contact.
In Their Own Story
The cavern air hums with a static charge that makes your hair stand on end. You step onto the pearlescent floor, the stone glowing softly under your boots, when suddenly the world fractures. A figure materializes ten feet away, not by walking, but by simply existing there one moment and exploding into being the next. It is a swirl of pink light, a humanoid shape composed entirely of frantic energy, trailing a ghostly after-image that lingers in your retinas.
You raise your weapon, but the creature is already gone. A soft *pop* echoes from above as it teleports to a ledge ten tiles higher, defying gravity with casual ease. It reappears instantly at your side, its form flickering like a dying candle flame caught in a gale. You swing, and the blade connects, sending a shockwave through its chaotic core. For a heartbeat, it freezes, the teleportation halted by your strike, its luminous body pulsing with rhythmic distress.
It recovers instantly, vanishing again to reappear behind you, its touch searing like frostfire. You dodge, heart pounding against your ribs, realizing that this is not a battle of endurance but of timing. Every moment it stands still is a gift; every flash of pink light is a warning. As it dissolves into particles once more, leaving only the fading echo of its presence, you understand the tragedy of the thing: it was never meant to be here, and now it can never leave.
Reader's Guide
Chaos Elementals are Hardmode enemies exclusive to the Underground Hallow, spawning strictly on Pearlstone, Pearlsand, or Pink Ice blocks within the Cavern layer. They require specific conditions to appear: no Town NPCs nearby, no safe background walls at your center, and you must have moved or used an item (excluding kites) within the last five seconds.
These foes possess a unique Fighter AI, running toward players before quickly teleporting to random positions within 20 tiles. They always land at least 4 tiles away in spaces that are at least 3 wide by 4 tall, avoiding lava but often falling into it post-teleport. Dealing direct damage with weapons or minions temporarily locks them out of their teleportation ability, creating a brief window for safe attacks. Traps and environmental damage do not interrupt this cycle.
For farming, ensure you are active using a Shadow Candle or by holding attack/jump buttons. Beware of Enchanted Swords, which share spawning conditions. Defeating them yields coins and rare drops: the Apple Pie (0.67%), Crystallize (0.5%), and the coveted Rod of Discord (0.2%, rising to 1% in Celebration Mk 10/Zenith worlds). Their high defense and knockback resistance make them a significant threat until their teleportation is suppressed.
Did You Know?
- Chaos Elementals will not spawn on Pearlsandstone, Hardened Pearlsand, or Hallowed grass blocks, requiring strictly Pearlstone, Pearlsand, or Pink Ice.
- In Celebration Mk 10 and Zenith worlds, the Rod of Discord drop rate increases to exactly 1%.
- Damage from traps or lava does not prevent a Chaos Elemental from teleporting; only direct player or minion damage stops it.
- The Bestiary describes them as once-living beings infused by the blessing who now erratically chase with an uncontrollable surge of power.
