Birds
Whispers of the forest that flee at your approach
The Bird , Blue Jay , and Cardinal are flying critters that can spawn in the Forest biome . They also have a small chance of spawning upon shaking a Forest or Pearlwood tree . Much like the Vulture , Birds remain still until approached, whereupon they will fly away. Birds will occasionally chirp when nearby. Birds may turn hostile to players with negative luck ; see hostile critter for details . Birds have only 5 health and no defense , and can be damaged by other enemies and players. Birds can be caught with any Bug Net to be carried around in the inventory and released later, or crafted into animated decorative furniture ( Bird / Blue Jay / Cardinal Cage ). Once crafted, the Birds cannot be released again, unless the furniture item is de-crafted via Shimmer (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) . Birds can be spawned by the Bird Statue , however statue-spawned critters cannot be caught with any Bug Net, and will disappear in a puff of smoke when the player attempts to do so. On the Desktop version , Console version , and Mobile version , there is a 1/400 (0.25%) chance for a Gold Bird to spawn in place of an ordinary one. - Internal Item ID : 2015–2017 - Internal Tile ID : 724 - Internal NPC ID : 74, 297, 298 - 1 Types - 2 Crafting 2.1 Used in - 3 Notes - 4 Tips - 5 Trivia 5.1 Bestiary entries - 6 See also - 7 History

Lore & Background
In the sun-drenched canopies of the Forest, the Hallow, and the crystalline Snow biome, life stirs in delicate flutters. The Bird, with its pristine white plumage, the Blue Jay bearing a raucous spirit akin to crows yet singing like wood thrushes, and the rare Cardinal with its crimson crest, serve as the gentle sentinels of these realms. They are creatures of pure instinct, remaining perfectly still until the weight of an intruder's presence disturbs their peace, at which point they take flight with a sudden burst of motion. Their existence is fleeting in combat but eternal in decoration; captured by the net and caged within stone walls, they become living ornaments that continue to chirp softly, bringing a slice of the wild into the safety of a player's home.
These avian wanderers are bound by the subtle mechanics of fortune. While normally peaceful observers of your journey, a shadow of bad luck can twist their nature, turning them hostile in a strange inversion of reality. Their mortality is stark; with merely five hearts of life and no armor to speak of, they fall easily to predation or the player's blade, yet they hold value beyond mere survival. From their capture springs the art of crafting, allowing their forms to be immortalized within terrariums as animated furniture. Even in death, the regular Bird offers a banner, a testament to its presence that can be placed to ward off future dangers, marking it as one of the few critters worthy of such honor.
In Their Own Story
You step into the clearing where sunlight filters through the emerald leaves, and there they are. A flock of white Birds rests upon a branch, motionless as statues carved from bone. You freeze, holding your breath, but the silence is broken by their soft chirping, a melody that seems to echo only for you. As you take a single step forward, the stillness shatters. Wings beat against the air in a frantic rhythm, and they vanish into the canopy, leaving nothing but swaying branches behind.
Later, your luck turns sour; the world feels heavy, and the sky darkens with unseen pressure. You hear that familiar chirp again, but this time it sounds sharp, jagged. A Cardinal drops from above, its red crest glowing like a warning flare. It does not flee. Instead, it hovers with an unnatural aggression, eyes fixed on you, ready to strike despite its fragility. In this moment of bad fortune, the friend becomes a foe. You raise your weapon gently, knowing that even if struck down, these creatures are but fleeting ghosts in the machine of your survival, destined to be caught or caged rather than truly destroyed.
Reader's Guide
Birds, including the Blue Jay and Cardinal, spawn naturally in Forest, Snow, and The Hallow biomes. They can also appear when shaking Forest or Pearlwood trees. These creatures remain stationary until approached, at which point they fly away to escape.
Threat Level: Minimal. Birds possess only 5 health and 0 defense. However, if the player suffers from negative luck, these normally peaceful critters may turn hostile. They deal no damage but can be attacked by other enemies or the player.
Farming Strategy: To acquire Bird Banners, hook a Bird Statue to wires to spawn Birds continuously. Note that statue-spawned birds cannot be caught with a Bug Net. For banners specifically, target regular Birds in the wild, as Blue Jays and Cardinals do not drop them. On Desktop, Console, and Mobile versions, there is a 1/400 chance for a rare Gold Bird to replace an ordinary spawn.
Utility: Catch any bird variant using a Bug Net to carry or release later. They can be crafted into animated furniture (Bird Cage) using Stone Blocks and the specific bird. Once caged, they cannot be released unless de-crafted via Shimmer.
