Lore & Background

Long before the world knew the light of day or the terror of Hardmode, the Dungeon stood as a fortress of ancient malice. Within its brick-lined halls roamed beings who were once mortal, now stripped of flesh and sanity by a curse that binds them to undeath. These are the Angry Bones, former inhabitants whose unending rage keeps their skeletal frames animated even after death has claimed them. They do not sleep, nor do they hunger for food; instead, they yearn only for the warmth of living blood to slake a thirst that can never be quenched.

Their existence is defined by an endless, grinding fury. When intruders breach their sanctuary, these spectral guardians rise with a clatter of dry bone against stone, their hollow eye sockets burning with a cold, blue fire. They do not merely stand guard; they hunt. Their Fighter AI drives them to breach barriers that would hold back lesser foes, smashing through wooden doors with relentless precision to pursue their prey into the deepest shadows. Some are larger, more formidable than others, carrying enough vitality to sustain a lingering spirit even after their physical forms are shattered in battle.

Though they are mindless in their rage, fragments of their past lives sometimes remain in the debris they leave behind. Amongst the scattered bones and dust, rare artifacts of their former selves or the dungeon's history may be found: ancient helms, voodoo dolls for dark rituals, or keys that unlock secrets deeper within the labyrinth. They are a grim reminder that death in Terraria is rarely an end, but often a transformation into something far more dangerous.

In Their Own Story

The air grows cold as you step past the threshold of brick and mortar, the silence of the Dungeon pressing against your ears. Suddenly, the scrape of stone on stone breaks the stillness. From the shadows, a skeleton emerges, its bones glowing with a faint, ghostly luminescence. It does not pause to assess; it charges, driven by an ancient, programmed hatred.

You raise your shield as it leaps, the collision ringing out like a bell in a tomb. The creature smashes into you, its skeletal arms flailing with surprising strength. You stumble back, but before you can recover, it lunges again, this time smashing through a closed wooden door that stood between you and safety. Wood splinters under the force of its undead assault, sending shards flying as the barrier crumbles.

You scramble to the ceiling, grappling your way up just as another skeleton joins the fray below. They cannot follow you here, their rage burning futilely against the stone above. Below, they pace and leap, their hollow cries echoing through the corridor. You watch them for a moment, a grim tableau of eternal fury, before dropping down to strike the final blow, knowing that in this place, death is only the beginning.

Reader's Guide

The Angry Bones are a pre-Hardmode threat exclusive to the Dungeon environment. They appear once you descend deep enough into the brick-lined corridors, acting as the primary guardians of this forbidden zone.

These undead foes utilize the Fighter AI, meaning they aggressively pursue players and can open closed doors after one or two hits. When close, or if you are positioned above them, they will leap to bridge the distance. Their threat level is moderate for early-game adventurers but escalates quickly in groups due to their door-smashing capability.

To survive an encounter, utilize weapons found within the Dungeon itself, such as the Water Bolt or Blue Moon, whose piercing projectiles can hit multiple bones at once. If overwhelmed, grapple to walls or ceilings; this vertical positioning keeps you out of their melee range and prevents them from leaping onto you effectively.

Farming these enemies is a viable strategy for specific drops. They reliably drop 2-6 Bones. There is a chance they will drop one of three rare items: the Bone Wand (0.4%), the Tally Counter (1% on Desktop, Console, and Mobile), or the Golden Key (1.52%). Additionally, there is a small chance for an Ancient Necro Helmet (0.22%) or a Clothier Voodoo Doll (0.33%). Note that two of their variants possess over 100 health, making them potential sources for Dungeon Spirits once Plantera has been defeated.
