Lore & Background

['In the sunless depths where the Cavern layer bleeds into the Underground Jungle, a predator of ancient design hunts with terrifying efficiency. Unlike its passive kin that wait motionless in the shadows, this Angler Fish is a relentless chaser, driven by an insatiable hunger to pursue prey across the murky currents. The small, pulsating bulb atop its head casts a faint, ghostly glow, serving not as a beacon of hope for the lost traveler, but as a deceptive lure designed to draw victims into the crushing embrace of the deep.', "The true horror lies in what follows the initial strike. When this aquatic nightmare latches onto a defender, it injects a potent toxin that halts the body's natural healing processes, leaving the victim to bleed out slowly in the cold water. This ability to inflict the Bleeding debuff transforms a simple skirmish into a race against time, forcing adventurers to rely on swift movement and careful positioning rather than brute force alone.", 'It is said that some of these creatures are content to lie in wait for their prey, but these particular specimens revel in the hunt. They have evolved beyond mere ambush tactics, becoming agile hunters that swim faster than any Piranha, closing distances with alarming speed before the glow of their lures can be fully comprehended by those who dare to explore the flooded tunnels.']

In Their Own Story

['The water is heavy and cold, pressing against your armor as you navigate the winding tunnels of the Underground Jungle. Your torch flickers weakly, its flame sputtering in the damp air before extinguishing entirely. In the sudden darkness, a single point of light appears ahead—a soft, rhythmic pulse drifting through the gloom. It looks like a guide, a friendly signal to lead you back to safety.', "You reach out instinctively, drawn by the gentle glow, but as your fingers brush the water's surface, the light shifts with unnatural speed. The Angler Fish surges forward, its sleek form cutting through the current faster than any creature should be able to move. Before you can react, jaws snap shut around your arm, and a searing pain floods your nervous system. You feel the warmth of blood leaving your body, the familiar rhythm of regeneration failing against the venomous bite.", "Panic sets in as you realize the light was never meant to save you; it was bait for a meal that refuses to be left behind. The fish drags you deeper into the shadows, its glowing bulb now the only thing illuminating your desperate struggle against the crushing weight of the ocean's depths."]

Reader's Guide

The Angler Fish is a Hardmode aquatic enemy found exclusively within the Cavern layer and the Underground Jungle. It spawns in water-filled tunnels where the environment transitions from stone to jungle foliage, requiring players to navigate flooded sections carefully.

This enemy utilizes a Swimming AI that allows it to chase players with greater speed than Piranhas. Its primary threat is the Bleeding debuff, which has a 12.5% chance to activate on contact, preventing life regeneration for durations ranging from 45 seconds in lower difficulties up to nearly two minutes in Master mode. With damage scaling up to 240 and moderate defense, it poses a significant risk to unprepared adventurers.

To defeat them effectively, maintain distance using ranged weapons or magic that can target through water. Avoid melee combat unless you have strong armor and healing potions ready to counteract the loss of regeneration. Farming this enemy yields Angler Fish Banners for stat boosts and rare loot including the Robot Hat (0.4% drop rate) and Adhesive Bandage (1% to 1.99% drop rate).
