Wizard

A bound sorcerer freed from caverns to sell arcane wonders

Someone once told me friendship is magic. That's ridiculous. You can't turn people into frogs with friendship. — The Wizard The Wizard is a Hardmode NPC vendor who sells magic -related items. He will move in once the following criteria have been met: The Wizard will defend himself against nearby enemies by casting fireballs similar to those of the Flower of Fire , which damage and inflict the On Fire! debuff on enemies for 5 seconds. He deals 18 / 27 / 31 damage at the start of the game, and gains various stat boosts as the player progresses. The Wizard occasionally replaces his regular quote with a comment about the player's luck , and this is the only way to estimate a player's luck value in the game. The Bound Wizard is one of the few entities that can be detected by the Lifeform Analyzer or its upgrades. - Ball of Fire - Internal NPC ID : 108 - Internal Projectile ID : 15 - Internal NPC ID : 106 - There is an available vacant house . - Rescuing him as the Bound Wizard , who can be rarely encountered in the Cavern layer once the Wall of Flesh has been defeated. Lore & Background

He views the world with a cynical yet whimsical eye, dismissing the notion that friendship alone can conjure miracles like turning men into frogs. To him, true power lies in the arcane arts, not in platitudes. He wanders the Hallow with a sense of familiarity, appreciating its unicorns and rainbows, while recoiling from the abominations of the Corruption, Crimson, or Dungeon which disturb his magical senses. His crystal ball offers glimpses of fortune, though he often finds himself selling more than just supplies; he sells the promise of power itself.

In Their Own Story

The air in the cavern was thick with the scent of wet stone and ancient magic. You spotted him first not by sight, but by the faint, shimmering aura that only a Lifeform Analyzer could reveal amidst the gloom. There he sat, bound by glowing chains to a jagged rock face, his robes tattered yet still vibrant against the grey backdrop. With trembling hands, you approached and struck the final blow of liberation. The chains shattered into motes of light, and the man stood tall, brushing dust from his shoulders with a look of profound relief. "Thanks for saving me, friend! This bondage was starting to chafe," he muttered, his voice echoing softly in the vast underground expanse. He looked at you with eyes that held centuries of secrets, offering a crooked smile before vanishing into the shadows, destined to find a home where magic could flow freely once more.

Reader's Guide

To unlock the Wizard, you must first defeat the Wall of Flesh to enter Hardmode. Once in this new state, explore the Cavern layer during nighttime or use a Hunter Potion to locate the rare Bound Wizard. Interact with him to free him; if he dies before moving in, he will eventually respawn as long as a valid vacant house exists.

Once moved in, his happiness depends heavily on proximity and biome choice. He thrives in The Hallow and prefers living near the Golfer, Princess, or Merchant. Conversely, he dislikes the Ocean and has strong animosity toward the Cyborg, Witch Doctor, and any Corruption or Crimson environments. Avoid placing him near these neighbors to maximize his sales discounts.

The Wizard is essential for magic-focused builds, selling powerful spellbooks like the Book of Skulls and the Crystal Ball. He also sells the Magic Cowl and various potions. Beyond his inventory, he serves as a unique luck indicator; by asking about your fortune, his specific dialogue reveals whether your current luck value is high, low, or average, allowing for precise optimization of drop rates.
