Lore & Background

In the deepest veins of the earth, where stone is born and crushed by ancient pressure, dwell a people who find beauty not in growth but in chaos. The Demolitionist is one such soul, a dwarf whose beard bristles with static and whose eyes gleam with the promise of detonation. To him, the Corruption's spreading blight or the Crimson's fleshy corruption are merely obstacles waiting for a proper introduction to gunpowder. He views purification as a futile struggle against entropy, preferring instead the clean, final silence that follows an explosive blast.

His philosophy is simple yet terrifying: if a problem cannot be solved with a pickaxe, it must be solved with dynamite. He wanders the surface world only when compelled by curiosity or the smell of fresh explosives in a player's pocket, eager to share his wares. Unlike the cautious Guide who offers gentle advice, this merchant offers liberation through destruction. He speaks of fuses and Grenades as if they were old friends, recounting tales of lightning striking his carts with glee rather than fear.

Though he appears small and unassuming next to taller villagers, his presence commands a strange respect. He is the embodiment of controlled violence, a guardian who defends his home by hurling Grenades at approaching threats with surprising efficacy. Whether in the dark depths or the rainy surface, he remains an agent of change, ready to reshape the world one explosion at a time.

In Their Own Story

You find him huddled beneath a flickering torch, his silhouette small against the cavern wall. The air smells faintly of sulfur and damp earth. He looks up, his beard twitching as he notices the Bomb jangling in your belt pouch. "Why purify the world when you can just blow it up?" he grumbles, his voice rough like grinding stones.

He gestures to a small pile of crates beside him, where Grenades and Dynamite sit ready for purchase. His eyes dart nervously toward the tunnel entrance as a distant screech echoes through the dark. "It's a good day to die," he mutters, reaching for a fuse. With a practiced flick of his wrist, he hurls a Grenade into the shadows. A moment later, a deafening boom shatters the silence, followed by the clatter of defeated enemies.

He dusts off his hands, looking almost disappointed that the threat was so easily handled. "Even Mother Nature likes a taste of gratifying demolition," he says with a wry grin. You realize then that he is not merely a merchant, but a force of nature in his own right, waiting for you to hand him the keys to reshape the world.

Reader's Guide

To summon the Demolitionist into your world, you must first ensure the Merchant is already residing in a valid house. Once established, simply craft or acquire any explosive item—such as a Bomb, Grenade, or Dynamite—and hold it in your inventory; items stored in chests do not count. With an empty house available and an explosive in hand, he will appear to offer his services.

This NPC thrives in the underground depths, preferring the Caverns and The Underworld where dwarves feel most at home. He enjoys the company of the Tavernkeep, Princess, Mechanic, Goblin Tinkerer, and Arms Dealer, but despises the Ocean due to moisture hindering his fuses. Avoid placing him in Corrupt or Crimson biomes if you wish to keep his mood stable, as he finds the malice there overwhelming.

The Demolitionist sells a variety of explosives essential for early-game progression, allowing players to mine Ebonstone and Crimstone efficiently without needing the Deathbringer Pickaxe. Beyond commerce, he is a capable defender; during combat, he throws Grenades that deal significant damage, making him a valuable ally during Blood Moons or invasions. His presence transforms your base into a fortress of fire and steel.
