Lore & Background
In a world of jagged stone and endless night, the Painter arrives as a solitary figure of refinement, claiming to distinguish shades that elude the common eye. He speaks in riddles about turquoise versus blue-green, guarding his palette secrets with a whimsical arrogance. To him, the world is not merely terrain but a canvas waiting for the right hue, whether it be the vibrant greens of the Jungle or the desolate grays of a storm-battered shore. His very presence suggests that even in the chaos of Terraria's dangers, there is room for aesthetic order and artistic expression.
He is a creature of specific moods, his wares shifting with the phases of the moon and the seasons that turn. When he speaks of rain as a nightmare or thunder bringing furniture to life, one senses a deep, almost spiritual connection to the elements. He finds solace in the quiet solitude of the Jungle, where natural pigments abound, yet recoils from the cacophony of crowded towns. His existence is a testament to the belief that beauty can be curated, even if it requires a paintball gun to defend his vision from the monsters that lurk in the dark.
In Their Own Story
The rain hammered against the roof, a relentless drumming that made you wince. Inside your modest home, the Painter sat fidgeting with a palette knife, his eyes darting toward the window. "Rain is my worst nightmare," he muttered, shaking his head as if to dislodge the moisture from his mind. "It literally rinses out all my hard work!" He stood up, pacing the small room, his movements agitated by the storm outside.
You watched him, noting the way his fingers twitched as if mixing invisible colors in the air. The thunder rolled again, a deep rumble that vibrated through the floorboards. "When the thunder rolls... it really brings out the colors on the furniture," he said, a strange glint returning to his eyes. For a moment, the gloom of the storm seemed to vanish, replaced by a vivid mental image only he could see. He turned to you, holding up a small brush. "Check out the Party Girl outside," he whispered conspiratorially. "Now that's a girl who can paint the town red!" In that instant, the world felt less like a battleground and more like a gallery waiting to be filled.
Reader's Guide
To summon the Painter into your world, you must first ensure there is an empty, valid house available. More critically, at least eight other town NPCs must already reside in your world; this count includes the Old Man, Traveling Merchant, and town pets, but excludes the Skeleton Merchant. Once these conditions are met, he will move in during the day.
The Painter offers two distinct shop menus: a standard "Shop" for paints, brushes, and tools, and a "Decor" menu dedicated to paintings and wallpapers. His inventory is dynamic; the specific artworks and backgrounds available depend on the biome you visit him in, the current moon phase, and seasonal events. To access every unique painting, you may need to relocate his house or teleport him to different biomes using statues or teleporters.
For maximum happiness, place him near the Dryad or Princess in a Forest or Jungle setting. He thrives in quiet, sparse areas but despises crowded towns and evil biomes like the Corruption. In combat, he defends himself with a Paintball Gun, dealing increased damage as you progress into Hardmode. While his items are decorative, they are essential for completing your base's aesthetic and unlocking specific achievements tied to painting mechanics.

- Talking to him in a Hallowed Desert allows you to purchase two biome-exclusive paintings simultaneously.
- Submerging the Painter in Shimmer transforms his appearance visually but has no impact on his gameplay mechanics or dialogue.
- He sells Pylons in both his Shop and Decor menus if one is available for sale.
