Lore & Background

In the earliest days of a new world, before the shadows lengthen and monsters rise from the deep, there stands a humble figure clad in simple attire. The Merchant is not a warrior nor a mage, but a man of trade who believes that even in the face of an approaching apocalypse, commerce must continue. He views his wares as essential tools for survival, peddling iron bars, torches, and the vital Piggy Bank to any traveler with fifty silver coins to spare. His presence is a beacon of normalcy, a reminder that civilization persists amidst chaos.

Though he claims no interest in junk or angel statues, his inventory holds secrets that hint at the world's darker undercurrents. He stammers when speaking of Cthulhu, unable to pronounce the name without faltering, yet speaks of the great eye with a nervous reverence that betrays his fear. When the Blood Moon rises and the sky turns crimson, he remains steadfast in his stall, declaring that not even such terror can halt capitalism. His loyalty is bought with gold, but his service provides the foundation upon which adventurers build their empires.

The Merchant finds solace in the quiet forests, preferring the company of the Princess or the Golfer over the frugal Tax Collector or the difficult Angler. He thrives where neighbors are few and the view is clear, for he believes a good vista attracts customers. Whether submerged in Shimmer to change his visage or standing guard with throwing knives when threatened, he remains the constant supplier of hope in a world that often runs on despair.

In Their Own Story

The sun hung low over the forest, casting long shadows that seemed to stretch toward you like grasping fingers. You approached a small, hastily constructed wooden house where a man in a brown vest and cap stood waiting. His eyes darted nervously at the treeline before settling on you with a forced smile.

"Lovely morning, wouldn't you say? Was there something you needed?" he asked, his voice trembling slightly as if expecting an ambush rather than a transaction. You placed your pouch of silver coins on the counter, the weight of fifty pieces satisfying his primary requirement. He exhaled in relief, his demeanor shifting instantly from wary to enthusiastic.

"Ah, they will tell tales of you some day... good ones I'm sure," he murmured, sliding a Piggy Bank toward you. "Check out my dirt blocks; they are extra dirty." As the wind picked up, rustling the leaves, he glanced upward, his expression darkening. "I feel like an evil presence is watching me," he whispered, clutching his hat. For a moment, the air grew heavy, and you both felt the gaze of something ancient and terrible. He cleared his throat, forcing a laugh. "But fear not! Night will be upon us soon, friend. Make your choices while you can." The threat of the coming night was real, but so too was the safety of his shop.

Reader's Guide

To summon the Merchant into your world, you must meet two specific conditions: ensure there is a vacant, valid house available, and guarantee that all players in the current world collectively possess more than 50 Silver Coins in their inventories. Note that coins stored in chests or Piggy Banks do not count toward this total; they must be physically carried by your character(s). Once these requirements are met, he will move in immediately.

The Merchant thrives in the Forest biome and prefers living near the Princess, Golfer, or Nurse. He dislikes the Desert and has poor relations with the Tax Collector due to their frugality and the Angler because of personality clashes. To maximize his happiness, avoid placing him in the Corruption, Crimson, or Dungeon, as he believes monsters cannot buy goods.

His importance to progression cannot be overstated. He is the primary source for early-game essentials like the Bug Net, Furnace (in specific seeds), and the Piggy Bank, which expands your storage capacity significantly. If killed, he will automatically respawn after a short period provided a house remains vacant. In combat, he defends himself by lobbing Throwing Knives, dealing 12 to 21 damage depending on world progression.
