Lore & Background
In the chaotic sprawl of Terraria, where magic and steel collide, there exists a merchant who deals solely in the language of ballistics. The Arms Dealer is no mere shopkeeper; he is a pragmatic survivor who understands that in this land, silence often precedes death, and only the crack of gunfire can restore order. He carries himself with a rough confidence, his pockets heavy with the tools of destruction, from humble musket balls to high-velocity rounds capable of piercing ancient armor. His philosophy is blunt and unyielding: 'Hey, this ain't a movie, pal. Ammo is extra.' To him, the thrill of the hunt is secondary to the cold hard fact that without ammunition, even the finest firearm is nothing but dead weight.
His origins are shrouded in the dust of the frontier, yet he appears only when the player proves worthy of bearing arms. He seeks a quiet corner of the world to conduct his trade, preferring the isolation of the Desert or the crisp air of the Snow biome where the wind does not carry the scent of corruption. Despite his gruff exterior, he forms unique bonds with those around him, eyeing the Nurse with longing and viewing the Demolitionist as a rival in the field of explosives. When danger approaches, he sheds his merchant persona to defend his home with a Flintlock Pistol or a roaring Minishark, proving that even a dealer of death knows how to wield it when necessary.
In Their Own Story
The wind howled through the canyon, carrying the scent of ozone and impending rain. You found him sitting on a crate, polishing a gleaming revolver under the dim light of your torches. He didn't look up as you approached, his focus entirely on the brass casing in his hand. "Hey," he grunted, sliding the weapon onto the counter with a heavy clatter. "You got what it takes to carry these?"
He gestured to the array of firearms behind him, from the ancient Musket to the sleek Minishark. You placed your own battered pistol on the table, the only proof you needed that you were ready for his wares. He glanced at it, then at your inventory, a flicker of approval crossing his face. "Good," he said, tapping the glass case filled with silver bullets. "But remember, the gun is just the beginning. The real cost is in the lead."
Suddenly, the sky darkened as a storm rolled in, thunder rattling the wooden planks of your makeshift town. He stood up, holstering his weapon and drawing a fresh clip. "If you time it right," he muttered with a grim smile, "no one will hear your gunshots with the thunder." As the first enemy crested the hill, he didn't hesitate, raising his Minishark to the sky. The roar of the storm was instantly drowned out by the relentless staccato of his defense, a symphony of metal and fire that kept the darkness at bay.
Reader's Guide
To summon the Arms Dealer into your world, you must first prove your capability with firearms. He will not appear until you possess at least one qualifying gun or bullet directly in your inventory; items stored in chests or Piggy Banks do not count. The easiest method is to smash a Shadow Orb or Crimson Heart in your evil biome, which guarantees a drop of the Musket or The Undertaker respectively. Alternatively, open Ivy Chests for the Boomstick or Presents for the Red Ryder.
Once unlocked, ensure you provide him with a valid house. He thrives in specific biomes and social circles. For maximum happiness, place him in the Desert or Snow biome, ideally near the Nurse, Princess, Steampunker, Golfer, or Demolitionist. Avoid crowding him with too many NPCs or placing him in Corruption/Crimson zones, as he dislikes being prey.
His inventory is essential for progression, offering a vast array of ammunition types and firearms that scale from early game to late Hardmode. In pre-Hardmode, he defends himself with a Flintlock Pistol, but upon entering Hardmode, he upgrades to the Minishark. His presence transforms your arsenal, allowing you to tackle bosses and events with superior firepower.
Did You Know?
- The Arms Dealer transforms into a Shimmered form when submerged in Shimmer, though this is purely visual.
- He deals significantly less damage in Hardmode (15/22/26) compared to pre-Hardmode (24/36/42) to balance the Minishark's fire rate.
- The Flare Gun and its flares do not count toward his spawning requirement, as they are not true bullets.
- His name 'Brimst' is likely a reference to brimstone (sulfur), a key component of gunpowder.
