Truffle
A gentle guardian of the glowing deep who fears being eaten more than enemies
There's been such a huge rumor that's being spread about me, 'If you can't beat him, eat him!' — The Truffle The Truffle is a Hardmode NPC vendor who sells various mushroom -themed items. He can arrive homelessly as soon as Hardmode starts, and he can only move into vacant houses that are located in (or near) a surface Glowing Mushroom biome (i.e. one that is above 0 elevation ). If the Truffle spawns into a vacant house in a surface Glowing Mushroom biome, he is considered unlocked and can then be reassigned to a house at any elevation, as long as it is in a Glowing Mushroom biome. Moving a homeless Truffle into suitable house is not considered unlocking him; in this case, he can only be reassigned into houses in surface Glowing Mushroom biomes. After the Truffle dies, if the Truffle is unlocked, he can respawn into vacant houses located in Glowing Mushroom biomes at any height; if he is not unlocked, he can only respawn into vacant houses located in surface Glowing Mushroom biomes. Otherwise, he can only respawn homelessly. When threatened by enemies, the Truffle will release Mushroom Spores, which hover in midair and explode into spore clouds upon contact with enemies. - Truffle Spore - Internal NPC ID : 160 - Internal Projectile ID : 590 - Surface Glowing Mushroom biomes do not generate naturally and therefore must be manually created. 100 tiles of Mushroom grass and Glowing Mushroom plants are required to create a Glowing Mushroom biome. - 1 Items sold - 2 Living preferences - 3 Shimmered form - 4 Notes - 5 Achievements - 6 Tips - 7 Names - 8 Quotes 8.1 Interaction quotes - 8.2 Happiness quotes - 9 Trivia - 10 Gallery - 11 History - 12 References

Lore & Background
Deep within the luminous canopies of the Surface Glowing Mushroom biome, where bioluminescent fungi paint the air in ethereal blues, dwells the Truffle. He is a solitary soul, a merchant of mycelial wonders who views his fellow townsfolk with a mixture of caution and curiosity. Rumors swirl through the underground that he is a delicacy to be consumed if one cannot defeat him, a notion that haunts his every waking moment. To the Truffle, the world above is a place of constant peril, where neighbors like the Clothier have been known to chew on sleeping feet, and the very air feels heavy with unspoken hunger.
Despite his fragility, he possesses a strange resilience born of the dark, calm places he cherishes. He releases mushroom spores when threatened, a defensive cloud that explodes upon contact with foes, marking him as more than just a passive vendor. His existence is tied strictly to the surface layers where the glowing grass thrives, for below lies the Corruption or Crimson where he would surely perish. Yet, once his sanctuary is established and his spirit unlocked from the fear of being homeless, he becomes a vital link between the player and the arcane arts of the Deep Glowing Mushroom.
He speaks often of his brothers, brittle and easily frightened by the wind, and finds solace only in the company of those who do not seek to devour him. The Dryad is his one true friend among the humans, the only one he trusts with his life. In a world where survival is often a violent struggle, the Truffle represents a fragile hope, a reminder that even in the deepest dark, there are beings who simply wish to live, sell their wares, and avoid becoming a meal.
In Their Own Story
The air in the cavern hums with a soft, blue vibration as you descend into the artificial forest of spores. Giant mushrooms stretch toward the sky like living pillars, their caps glowing with an otherworldly light that casts long, dancing shadows against the walls. You find him there, standing near a cluster of glowing flora, his small form dwarfed by the towering fungi he calls home. He looks up, eyes wide with a mixture of recognition and anxiety.
"You haven't seen any pigs around here have you?" he asks, his voice trembling slightly as he glances nervously at the dark corners of your makeshift shelter. "My brother lost his leg to one." You nod slowly, offering no threat, only a quiet presence. He seems to relax, though a shadow still lingers in his gaze. "Between you and me," he whispers, leaning closer, "the Dryad is the only one I trust. Everyone else... they look at me like I'm a snack."
Suddenly, a scuttling sound echoes from the tunnel entrance. The Truffle's eyes widen instantly. He raises his hands, and a cloud of shimmering spores erupts into the air, hovering between you and the approaching danger. "There's been such a huge rumor," he mutters, almost to himself, "that if you can't beat him, eat him!" The spores detonate in a flash of blue light as enemies rush forward, protecting their gentle guardian. In that moment of chaotic brilliance, you realize this small creature is the heart of your glowing sanctuary.
Reader's Guide
To summon the Truffle, you must first enter Hardmode and construct a valid house within a Surface Glowing Mushroom biome. This biome does not generate naturally; you must manually create it by placing at least 100 tiles of Mushroom Grass blocks (convertible from mud using the Clentaminator with Green Solution) and planting Glowing Mushrooms on the surface layer or in space. Once a vacant house exists here, the Truffle will arrive homelessly.
Unlocking him is crucial for flexibility. If he moves into a valid surface house while homeless, you must kill him to force his respawn. Upon returning, if the house remains in a Glowing Mushroom biome, he becomes 'unlocked.' This allows you to move him to any Glowing Mushroom house at any elevation, including underground, and ensures he respawns there even after death. Without this step, he is trapped strictly to surface biomes.
The Truffle sells essential late-game items, most notably the Steampunker's upgrade, the Clentaminator, and various mushroom-themed furniture. He also sells the Biome Key Mold for the Mushroom biome. For maximum happiness and reduced prices, house him in a Glowing Mushroom biome near friendly NPCs like the Guide, Dryad, or Princess. Avoid crowded areas and hostile biomes, as his anxiety rises when he feels threatened or too far from his glowing roots.
