Lore & Background
Deep within the Cavern layer, where light rarely penetrates, a solitary figure strolls through the stone corridors. He is no mere undead mindless to combat; he is a merchant with a purpose. His inventory shifts with the lunar tides above, suggesting a connection to the surface world despite his preference for staying below. He peddles Slime Oil claiming miraculous cures, though few dare test such elixirs on their living flesh. Sometimes he bears names like Jack Sellington or Rattles Magoo, hinting at past lives lost beneath the soil.
He ignores kin of bone, sparing Armored Vikings and Spore Skeletons alike, yet hurls bones at intruders who threaten his trade. Some say he is a spirit bound to the earth, counting as seven souls against the spawn limits of the dark. His presence halts the natural chaos of the underground, creating a strange pocket of silence where only his voice echoes. He fears the rain and the surface's destructive weather, preferring the dry embrace of stone. Whether he is truly alive or merely animated by commerce remains a riddle for the brave cavers to solve.
In Their Own Story
The pickaxe strikes stone, sparks flying into the dark. You are alone until a voice echoes from the shadows. "Stay away from the spiders," he warns, rattling as he steps forward. A skeleton vendor stands amidst the caverns, immune to the monsters that circle you. His bones clatter softly as he gestures to his wares. You feel the strange calm of his presence; enemies hesitate at this boundary of commerce. He speaks of Slime Oil and broken hips, a madman selling miracles in the deep. The air feels heavier around him, suppressing the spawn of beasts. He mentions the moon above shifting his stock, a tether to the world you fled. You trade gold for items you cannot craft elsewhere. Then, as quickly as he arrived, he fades into the dark when you step off-screen, leaving only the echo of his laughter and a pile of bones behind. The silence returns, but now it feels watched.
Reader's Guide
To find the Skeleton Merchant, explore the Cavern layer randomly during any time of day. He spawns without a house and despawns immediately if you leave his sight. Do not place Shadow Candles nearby as they prevent him from appearing entirely.
His stock refreshes at 4:30 AM daily regardless of respawn, changing based on the current moon phase. This makes timing your visits crucial for specific rare items. He sells unique goods like Slime Oil and various ores that vary with lunar cycles.
He is useful for clearing inventory during long mining trips by selling unwanted loot. Note that he counts as seven NPCs for spawn limits, effectively blocking other enemies from spawning nearby. Use the Lifeform Analyzer to track him if specific names appear on your radar. He does not increase critter spawns despite his presence. Remember he cannot teleport via Portal Gun or King Statue, so plan your route carefully around him.
His defense is low but sufficient against non-skeletons, throwing bones at threats while ignoring skeletal enemies like Armored Vikings. This makes him a rare safe haven in the deep dark, provided you do not attack first.
